Guqin, the seven-stringed zither, is the oldest solo stringed instrument among all Chinese musical instruments. Prssumably, Qin was originated from about 2000 years ago. It was discovered from a tomb around 500 B.C. to 200 B.C. Qin played an inflential role during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) as an expressive solo instrument for ritual and ceremonial music. Qin music is intended more as an avenue to sprititual purifiction than as a mode of entertainment. Qin was one of the four arts, which included Qin, Chess, Calligraphy, and Painting, the ancient scholars had to study. According to the Confucian studies, Qin was considered for worship, formation of one's character and regulation of political life of the state. |
