We went to dinner last night at a Seafood Restaurant.
That means, a shellfish restaurant, as that is all they serve.
I saw the oysters, but two guys at the next table took all the oysters in the shop, and ate the lot. They must have been planning a big evening, as they were drinking as well.
The table on the other side had calamari, and this looked like chopped octopus in a sauce, and was also cooked over an open brassiere over two hot coals. It looked nice, but was another 12,000, and we were having the shellfish.
We ordered the snails, and a large bowl full of assorted creatures came with some chilli sauce. They put two large burning coals into the brassiere on the table, and we put the live shellfish straight onto the top. They spat and sizzled and looked awful. I hated seeing them die. The tiny cockle shells were wrapped in silver foil, but many of them did not open, and they were just left there at the end if the meal.
The snail shells were also quite rotten. I brought one home as a souvenir, and sniffed it and it was quite off. I can see why we complained about the sea snails. The owner said he couldn't tell whether they were alive or not. I did not even try anything after that episode.
I hesitantly tasted a bit of cockle, but it was like leather and I spat it out after chewing it for ages. The mussel I hesitantly swallowed whole, and I enjoyed a slice of abalone that was cooking in that central tray. Everything else just did not interest me, not even watching them die.
Grace and Mr Bec ate steadily, and enjoyed it all very much. Mr B wore the white protector gloves they provide, and broke the shells and removed the insides with a pair of tongs, and chopsticks. Grace cut the meat into smaller pieces using kitchen scissors, and added them to the tray and the sauce made with onions, oil and chilli, which was quite delicious. There was a small Korean pancake as starter, and fresh chunky cucumber which I enjoyed.
The meal cost 30,000 won.
