Changling, the chief of the Ming Tombs, is the largest and is completely preserved.
The total internal area of the main building is 1956 square meters. There are 32 huge posts, and the largest measures about 14 meters in height.
Emperor Zhudi, the fourth son of Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang built this tomb. It is the only huge palace made of camphor wood. It covers about 1956 square meters. The ceiling is colorfully painted and supported by sixteen solid camphor posts. The floor was decorated with gold bricks.
The Tomb is edged with windows showing some costumes and head gear worn by the emperor.
It was immense and the pillars are similar and have been procured from all over China. Walking around was an awesome experience. It was dark and very quiet and manned by vigilant guards. The costumes worn by the Emperor were fantastically ornate. There was a head piece made of woven gold, and another for the Empress made of sapphire and blue stone. It was fantastic. The robes were huge...he may have been a very fat short man...and they were heavily embroidered in intricate patterns with much gold thread.
