| I have been Living and painting in the desert to tell the story of life out here. The paintings that I am doing in the desert are telling the story of my experiences here. Some are sad and some are glad. Some are angry and some are experiences only. The desert is a hard and lonely life. The friends I have made here are very prescious. They will live forever in my memory for the acts of kindness and the warmth of having a friend. In NT I had many wonderful experiences. I went on Bush trips, had bush tucker, saw dancing and listened to music. I learnt how to paint the stories and learnt how to create the basic of different types of indigenous Art. The skies out here are the most beautiful I have ever seen and the sunsets and sunrises are breathtakingly beautiful. I also thrilled at the different rock formations and have a huge collection of photographs from all my travels throughout the Bush. My time here is ended and soon there will start a different type of Art. Each period of my life has been characterized by a different type of Art based on the locality I have been living in. This one has been produced over a period of 3 years and at times attached to classroom instruction and demonstrations and also to deep feelings of alienation. I like this period for its color and its free expression for my art was often all I had. |

| Honey Ant Dreaming in the Sand. Acrylic on paper. A2 There is plenty of bush tucker in the desert if you know where to find it. I went with a group of ladies and kids from Haasts Bluff to look for witchetty grubs . They led me to a part of the desert where the wattle trees were plentiful and using crowbars they dug into the roots and found huge, soft, velvetty grubs. The children ate them as they were. Some were saved to cook on the hot coals where they became stiff and crisp with a soft yello centre like scrambled egg with a delicious aroma. Honey Ants are found where there are dead trees. The honey is thin and sweet. |

The older children take responsibility for the younger kids and often miss school because they have to take care of the family. They mainly walk looking for birds and small animals to track and follow. Shanghais are skillfully used and they draw pictures on the sand as they talk. Dogs are always there with them. |
