Homeostasis
With depression as a mental illness, we as society feel that it must be corrected.  People who suffer from depression try and have a positive out look on their mental condition by trying to  believe that they can make adjustments in their everyday lives to try and fight depression, such as taking in more sunlight and getting more exercise.  However with depression as a mental illness, it doesn't give us a feeling of maintaining homeostasis.  While under depression, one feels up and down, and sometimes suicidal.  No other animal has had the urge to kill themselves as we have.  The human brain can do many great things, but once in a while it does malfunction, but with the help of modern medicine, it can feel good again.
But should we?
We have created a great industry in the production of prozac, zoloft, and other anitdepressants.

But should we have ever started?

Are children getting diagnosed with this too early?

Is changing the natural state of ones brain with  anti-depressants pills not a good idea in the long run for evolutionary purposes?
