Genes   vs   Environment
What plays the bigger role in the cause of depression? Environment or genetic make-up?
One way to look at genetics as related to depression, is studying two sets of twins, one fraternal and one identical.

The Genetic Factor:
Identical twins, have 100% the same genes
Fraternal Twins have 50% of the same genes

It was found that if identical twin A is diagnosed with depression,  identical twin B has a 60-80% chance of having clinically diagnosed depression as well.

Where as fraternal twin A and fraternal twin B only have 10 percent chance of sharing depression in their genetics.

This shows that depression is hereditary.
To look at how a persons environment effects their susceptibility to depression is by looking at adopted children.  An adoptive child's brain will naturally have more in common with its biological parents than with its adoptive parents.

It can be seen that environment is a factor of triggering a depression, but it can never be the lone cause of it.
