11700ish a.d. Centuries later, in the early to mid 1700s, scientists dove in deep into the world of chemistry to find out what was unique about the bark of a willow tree to bring such pain relief. After the sweat and toil of these chemists they discovered that the chemical responsible for this relief is salicin.
By the early 1800s, Italian chemist Piria was the first to make a chemical closely related to salicin, salicylic acid. People began to use these two chemicals not only for headache pain relief but to treat the pain and swelling of arthritis and to reduce fever in the common cold. |
