The Olympic class was originally theorized in the mid 2370's as an enormous multi-task starship designed to carry the load of a Starfleet that was decimated during the Dominion Wars. The primary goal of the project was to design a ship that could take the place of several cargo or transport ships, as well as being able to limit the need for additional support ships. The Olympic class starships are designed to serve as a one-ship convoy.

Early on, it became apparent that a single ship may appear to be an easier target for interstellar pirates and the like; therefore, a compromise was reached in the design. Extra space was sacrificed, and a large aft bay was installed. This aft bay was designed to carry and conceal a small escort ship, either Defiant or Talionis class. This escort ship is entirely autonomous, but can travel completely powered down, much as it would be at a spacedock, but with the capability to power up and seperate within five minutes, should a threat arise.

There are, along with the many large cargo areas on the ship, two large bays on either side of the hull. These are capable of holding a large number of smaller craft, be it shuttles, runabouts, fighters, or SSHTs (Space to Surface Heavy Transports). It is this flexible design plan that has made the Olympic class starships excel, whether in service as cargo ships, colony ships, fighter platforms, or many other potential uses.

Many of the specifications of the Olympic class starships remain classified; however, it is known that these ships measure in at over one kilometer in length, and several hundred meters wide, and are the largest ship in the fleet at this time. They are capable of carrying a Defiant or Talionis class escort ship, as well as four MacArthur class SSHTs, and several shuttles, runabouts and fighters. Olympic class starships are capable of exceeding warp 9.8 under normal circumstances. They have heavy shielding and numerous phaser arrays and torpedo launchers. It is speculated that they also carry the new Mark II pulse phaser turrets.
