1952-1954

I remember visiting the model homes with my father when I was about 4 or 5, probably just before we moved from Long Island to Levittown. My father had worked for Abraham Levitt before World War II, and after the war, returned to work for Levitt and Sons, building the new developments on Long Island and then in Pennsylvania.
I have vague memories of my father leaving for Pennsylvania on Sunday evenings, and coming home the following Friday night. As the commute to Pennsylvania was too long for a daily trip, he and the other construction workers who followed Levitt to Pennsylvania would live in temporary housing in Bristol during the week. After two years of travel and separation, my parents decided to buy their first home in Levittown, PA.
We moved into our Jubilee in Indian Creek on December 8, 1954. What a beautiful house it was! Multicolored, speckled tile on the floors, beautiful light green bathroom fixtures in a bathroom just for we two girls, and a dining room light that pulled down from the ceiling! Bamboo-like folding closet doors, an automatic washing machine, and a funny clothesline that spun around. And kids to play with in every house on the street; never mind that we got stuck in the mud that surrounded every house when we explored the neighborhood for the first several months! It was like moving to Paradise!

This photo was taken some time after 1954, so was probably in one of the sections in Middletown Township.
