Good afternoon, I greeted
As I saw him on the deck
He acknowledged me with a weary grin
His hand resting on his neck
He smiled at me and started to say
‘So Maeve, how was your day?’
I cocked my head and looked at him
And said, ‘it was fine and gay!’
He laid a hand on my shoulder and said
‘I’m very pleased to hear it from you
It’s such a beautiful day to waste our time
Don’t you have some other things to do?’
I shook my head and looked out to sea
And said ‘I’ve had my back bent
With finishing the chores you’ve told me to do
And I’m not leaving if that’s what you meant!’
This time he was the one
Who shook his head, not me
He stared at his foot for a long time
Then joined me in staring at the sea.
I collected the nerves and then I asked
‘So why did you become a sailor?
Why didn’t you become a caliph, a merchant
Or even a tricky trader?’
He was quiet for some time
I thought he didn’t hear
I was about to repeat the question
When I heard his voice, loud and clear.
He said, ‘since I was a boy I’ve had
A passion for sailing the waters
I asked my brother to teach me
All about it that matters.’
‘So Doubar was your mentor,
the one who taught you all you knew’
he said ‘yes that’s true, but still incomplete
for I learned by myself as I grew’
‘the friends I’ve had while I was sailing
made my experience rich and complete
they trusted me with their secrets and treasures
a trust I’ve worked hard to meet.’
I stayed quiet as I ponder
What his life as a sailor could be
Then I realized with a jolt, a spark
His life was more or less the same with me!
Then he turned his gaze
And asked in a normal tone
‘so Maeve, since I’ve told you my story,
why don’t you tell me your own?
I think I gulped as I searched for an answer
To satisfy his inquisitive mind
And then I began to tell the tale
A story unique of its kind
I told him, I was the daughter once
Of a farmer in a town in Eire
We really lived a simple life
A life not difficult to aspire
And then one day the soldiers came
And murdered my town and family
I watched, horror-stricken
As no one was spared but me
I hid at the bushes at the side of the house
When I heard the rumbling sounds
It turned out to be the hooves of horses
And as it moves on lands it pounds
I watched as my mother was raped,
I watched while my father was speared
I wrapped myself in my arms embrace
And they finding me I feared
After the event, I ran and ran
Without bothering to even look back
For I feel I’ve seen enough
Of dead bodies that I’ve lost track.
I took a deep breath and I glanced at him
His blue eyes blazing a different hue
So I calmed myself and started to finish
The rest of my story as if on cue.
I ran and ran, into the forest I went
I slumped under a big oak tree
And I felt my eyes give way to my tears
And on it flowed, almost endlessly
A hand patted me on the shoulder,
And I looked up, my eyes wide with fear
For I thought that they had found me
So I look at his hand for a spear
Instead I saw a helping hand
Reaching out to take my own
And he helped me up into my feet
And into the forest we literally flown
From then on, Dimdim cared for me
As though I was a daughter he never had
And he was the one who taught me magic
Though he was good, I was bad.
I stopped when I heard him chuckle,
In an irate voice I asked ‘what’s so funny?’
He looked at me and then he said
Dimdim, your teacher? It’s uncanny!
I slapped him on the shoulder
For I wanted him to stop
But the jerk laughed even harder
So my foot on his foot I dropped.
He stopped, and bent to nurse his foot,
Which by now is stiff and sore
And so I smiled and then I left him
Pretending to do some other chore.
The End
