Title: The Key to both Worlds
Autor: Merlin
Summary: Maeve kann sich an nichts mehr erinnern und wird zu einer Amazone, wann wird sie sich wieder erinnern?
Sinbad quietly sat up in his bed, moving slowly, so as not to awaken Maeve and Elora. Maeve had had to get up at least five times that night to care for their fussy baby, finally ending with the child sleeping in their bed. Sinbad smiled as he watched his family sleep. Elora looked just like Maeve, with her bright red hair and chocolate brown eyes. The golden sun peeked through the window, enhancing the girls' fiery hair.
Elora snuggled closer to her mother. The pair looked like two angels, mistakenly put on earth, rather than heaven. Sinbad smiled as he watched Elora stir. She first opened her eyes, and scanned her surroundings. Spotting her father, she squealed with delight. She held out her arms to him and smiled, her dark brown eyes filled with happiness.
"Good morning, Love." Sinbad said, lifting his daughter into his arms.
She cooed at him and snuggled against his warm body. Sinbad picked up a blanket and wrapped it around Elora, not wanting her to catch a chill from the crisp early morning air. Sinbad tip-toed into the galley, silently shutting his cabin door behind him. Elora playfully tugged at her father's pendant, the one Omar had given him, which was hanging around his neck. Sinbad sat down at the table as Rongar stepped into the galley. Rongar smiled as he saw Elora sitting in Sinbad's lap. He tapped Sinbad on the shoulder.
"Good morning, Rongar." Sinbad greeted with a smile.
Rongar nodded and motioned to the baby sitting in his lap.
"Oh, here." Sinbad said, handing the child to Rongar.
Rongar sat down next to Sinbad at the table. He playfully bounced Elora on his strong knee. She squealed with laughter.
Sinbad smiled. Elora had brought joy into the dark galley without even trying. She had also done that to the crew. From the moment she had been born, everyone had tried their hardest to please her. Today, she was exactly four months old. Rongar smiled as he watched Elora's smile widen. She loved everyone on the crew so much, and everyone loved her in return.
She curiously looked up as she heard a door open. Doubar stepped out of his cabin. Sinbad could hear the loud rumbling in his stomach from his seat at the table.
"Morning, Little Brother." Doubar cheerfully welcomed.
His smile grew even wider when he saw his little niece, playing a little game of peek-a-boo with Rongar. He had never seen Rongar smile so much, than when he played with Elora.
"Hey, Rongar! My turn!" he said as he held out his arms and made his way to Rongar.
Elora cooed when she saw her giant uncle. He walked over to Rongar and scooped her up into his arms. Doubar propped her on his hip and grabbed a muffin off the table before heading updeck
Sinbad reached across the table and grabbed a blueberry muffin. He handed one to Rongar and bit into the delicious treat.
"This is good. Did you make them?" Sinbad asked.
Rongar nodded. He had gotten up early to make them for the crew. Rongar looked at Sinbad and then motioned towards Sinbad's and Firouz's cabins.
"I guess Firouz is still asleep." he stated. "Maeve had a long night. Elora wouldn't go to sleep again."
Firouz sleepily opened his door and slumped down in a chair. His hair was frazzled, sticking up in every which way, and the bags under his eyes made him look slightly like a raccoon.
"What happened to you? Rough night?" Sinbad questioned, trying to hold back a smile.
Firouz nodded. "I was up all night working on an invention."
"Let me guess, it was for Elora, right?" Sinbad sarcastically guessed.
Firouz nodded again.
Sinbad smiled. "You guys can't help yourselves can you?"
Rongar smiled and innocently shrugged. Firouz shrugged too.
"Sorry, Sinbad. We each consider her like our own daughter. At least, I love her as much as I could my own." Firouz admitted.
Sinbad smiled again. "Well, that's okay. I just don't want her to grow up and be selfish or something."
Firouz nodded understandably.
"Hi guys!" Maeve said as she entered the galley.
Rongar nodded to her and held out a plate for her.
"Thanks." she said, as she took the plate and sat down next to Sinbad.
She reached over and took a muffin. "Rongar, these are delicious!"
Maeve smiled. She loved it when the moor did the cooking. She couldn't remember such good food, except when her mother used to cook for her.
Rongar smiled and finished his own muffin, then headed updeck to get started on his daily tasks. Firouz went back into his cabin, to catch up on his missed sleep.
"Where's Elora?" Maeve asked, popping a blueberry into her mouth.
"Doubar took her updeck to see the sunrise.'" Sinbad said with a smile.
"Everyone is so great with her." Maeve added.
Sinbad nodded. "Maeve, I didn't get my good morning kiss." he drawled.
She rolled her eyes and walked over to him, plopping herself down on his lap.
"Good morning, Sinbad." she said as she leaned in for a kiss.
Maeve brought her lips to her husbands. They were soft and warm, and had a faint taste of blueberry. She was about to deepen the kiss, when Doubar came running down below deck.
"Sinbad, there's a big storm coming!" he said frantically.
Sinbad hesitated, then looked at Doubar. "I'm sure it's nothing we haven't been through before."
"Yes it is, Little Brother." he said quickly.
Doubar handed Elora to Maeve and ran back updeck.
"What are you going to do, Sinbad?" Maeve questioned as she cradled her baby in her arms.
Sinbad ran up the stairs. "Stay here, Maeve! I'm going to see how bad it is!"
As Sinbad ran updeck, he was greeted by a cold, disturbing breeze. There were huge storm clouds floating overhead. The early morning sky was dark and dreary, and a chilly rain drizzled down on the Nomad.
The usually calm waves smashed themselves against the ship. At the rate it was approaching at, Sinbad realized that it wasn't going to be as good a day as he had planned.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
"Tahir! Tighten down that rigging!" Sinbad ordered as Tahir ran over to the side of the ship.
Sinbad looked up at the sky. It was dark and dreary, and rain incessantly poured out of it. Huge waves washed over the deck, and bolts of lightning lit up the sky.
Sinbad was desperately trying to hold the tiller steady. They had to get past this storm. Sinbad watched as his crew held on to the ropes as another wave came crashing onto the ship.
Below deck, Maeve was trying to entertain Elora, who was becoming scared of the loud crashes of thunder.
"Here sweetie." Maeve said as she handed Elora her little ragdoll.
Another wave shook the Nomad, and Maeve held onto the bed, so as not to fall off. Elora closed her eyes and snuggled against her mother's soft chest.
She was just about to fall asleep, when a deafening clap of thunder shook her from the world of slumber.
"Whaaaa!" she wailed.
"There, there." Maeve said softly, stroking her daughter's soft hair. "It's okay."
Elora calmed down a little bit, at hearing her mother's soothing voice. She clutched her ragdoll to herself, as if to protect herself from the loud noises.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
A few hours later, the storm still showed no signs of letting up. Maeve quietly left her cabin, leaving Elora safely sleeping in the middle of the soft bed.
She went updeck, to see if Sinbad needed her for anything. As she opened the door and was greeted by a cold breeze.
Rain stung at her eyes as she made her way to her husband, who was standing at the tiller. Sinbad was completely soaked, and was getting tired of battling with the tiller for control of the ship.
"Maeve!" he yelled, trying to make his voice heard over the thunder.
She hurriedly made her way over to him. "Do you need me for anything?" She asked.
He shook his head. "Maeve, go back below deck!" He couldn't help but worry about her.
Suddenly, another huge wave smashed into the Nomad, washing over the deck, and causing several crew members to lose their balance.
As another wave rocked the ship, Maeve felt herself lose her own balance. And being next to the railing, she stumbled up against it.
She was trying to get away from the railing when a huge gust of wing blew across the boat. Maeve grabbed onto a rope, to keep her balance. But it wasn't enough. Maeve fell over the side of the ship.
"Sinbad!" she helplessly screamed, her hands reaching out to him.
"Maeve!" he called beck, running over to the railing.
He frantically searched the waves for his wife, but it was to no avail.
"Maeve!" he called again, "where are you?"
He put his foot up over the railing, prepared to jump in after her, when a strong hand pulled him back down.
"Doubar! Let me go!" he screamed.
"Little Brother," Doubar spoke gently, "let her go."
Sinbad slapped his brother's hand away. He again tried to climb up over the railing.
"No." Doubar said sternly, "think of Elora."
Sinbad backed down off the railing and ran below deck. He threw open the door to his cabin, and saw his daughter asleep on his bed.
He walked over to the bed and sat down on it. He gently picked the child up, arousing her from her sleep. She slightly whimpered, and Sinbad held her to him, his only means of comfort.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
"Owww." Maeve moaned as she woke up.
She rubbed her head, which was pounding. She looked around at her surroundings. Maeve was lying in a tent, adorned with exotic blankets, animal skins, and wooden decorations.
The bed she was lying in was covered with a soft fur blanket. It was an extremely soft bed, which Maeve almost regretted having to get out of.
"Oh good, you're awake." a woman said as she entered the tent.
Maeve sat up in the bed and looked at the woman. She was a pretty woman, with long black hair, dressed in a leather and animal skin dress.
"I am Queen Kitra. This is an Amazon Village. What is your name?" Kitra asked, almost harshly.
Maeve thought hard. "I don't know." she sputtered.
She looked at her bed, almost ashamed at what she had just said. Queen Kitra sat down next to her. Her stern expression lightened.
"That's all right." she said gently, "you must have hit your head in the storm."
Maeve nodded.
"From the looks of your clothes, I'd say you were Celtic." she observed.
Maeve looked at down at her brown and white dress. It was still wet from the storm.
"I'll get you some new clothes." Queen Kitra offered.
She turned to leave. "Queen Kitra?" Maeve asked.
"You can just call me Kitra. That's what all my sisters call me." she said.
"Sisters?" she asked, "you have a lot of them?"
Kitra smiled. "I have no blood sisters. All of the Amazons are my sisters. That's what we call each other."
Maeve nodded. "There are no men here, right?"
Kitra's face hardened. "Men are our enemy. They try to dominate us, and we won't stand for it. All Amazons can take care of themselves just fine without men."
Maeve understood. Men always did try to dominate the world. She wondered if Kitra would let her stay with them, at least a little while, so she could learn their ways.
Kitra smiled, almost knowing what Maeve was saying.
"You may stay with us as long as you need." she offered, "now I'll go get you some dry clothes."
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Maeve looked in the mirror at herself. Although she was thankful to Kitra for getting her some clothes, Maeve actually preferred the ones she was wearing before.
Her new outfit was a maroon colored leather, which was very tight, and didn't leave much to the imagination. She was glad that all the other Amazons wore similar clothing, so she wouldn't feel too out of place.
"There!" Kitra declared, stepping back to examine Maeve. "You look like a real Amazon now."
"I really appreciate this, Kitra." Maeve said.
Kitra smiled warmly. "Think nothing of it. It's just a favor from one Amazon sister to another. Right?"
Maeve nodded. She was glad Kitra had accepted her so quickly.
"Now you need a name. We need to call you something, don't we?" She asked.
Kitra sat down on Maeve's bed. She had a thoughtful expression on her face.
"I think you look like a 'Leila'." Kitra decided.
Maeve nodded. "I like that."
"It was my daughter's name. She died a few years ago in a battle with the men's village. She was about your age." Kitra said.
"I'm so sorry." Maeve replied.
"It's all right," Kitra said, "now let's get you a weapon to use."
Maeve looked at her questionably. "Why do I need a weapon, Kitra?"
Kitra laughed. "That's what we're all about! Even the young girls know how to fight and conduct themselves in battle."
Maeve nodded. To keep her place among the Amazons, she wasn't going to just get to sit around. She was going to have to fight.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
"Head for the shore!" Sinbad ordered to Doubar.
Doubar turned the tiller towards the beach. It had been a few hours since the storm had passed over, and Sinbad was determined to find Maeve.
He followed orders, and really wanted to believe that Maeve was still alive, but in his heart, he truthfully believed that she was dead.
Sinbad had Elora propped on his hip as he searched the shore line with the magnascope. Elora began to fuss, so Sinbad handed her to Firouz.
Firouz walked over to Doubar. "Do you think Maeve is still alive?" concern coloring his voice.
Doubar sadly shook his head. "We can only hope so for Sinbad and Elora's sake."
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Maeve swung the sword in the air a few times. "This one's too light." she commented.
"I guess the sword is a good weapon for you, Leila. You've got a good feel for it. Do you think you've used one before?" Kitria asked.
Maeve shrugged. "I have no idea."
"Come here, Haley!" Kitria called to another Amazon.
Haley walked over to the weapons hut. She was a tall, curly blond woman, with an angry looking face.
"What is it, Kitria?" she asked her.
"I want you to see how Leila handles this sword. Show her, Leila." Kitria commanded.
Maeve swung the steel sword at an imaginary foe. Haley's hard face lightened as she nodded approvingly.
"Well done." she said.
"Thanks." Maeve said, a bit modestly.
"You've obviously used a sword before. You don't have any idea where you learned?" Haley asked.
Maeve shook her head. She was glad that no one had made a big show of her yet. She felt very comfortable around the Amazons, almost as if she'd lived there for awhile.
"Tonight is the Amazon ceremony for you, Leila. It is to make you an official Amazon. That is, if you want to become one." Kitria said.
Maeve eagerly nodded her head at her new friend. "Oh please! I'd love that!"
Kitria smiled and put her arm around Maeve's shoulders. "Come on, I'll show you around the rest of the village."
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Sinbad sat on the edge of his bed, slowly rocking his daughter to sleep in her cradle. It was night, and Doubar had volenteered to keep looking.
They had decided to search the island in the morning. Sinbad wiped his tear filled eyes. He missed Maeve so much already, and he prayed to Allah that she was still alive. Elora started to whimper from her cradle.
"Shhh," Sinbad gently whispered, "Daddy's here."
Elora held open her arms to her father. She loved to sleep in her parents bed at night. Sinbad picked her up in his arms and held her close to him.
He needed comfort right now. Elora snuggled up to him, giving him all the solace he needed. Sinbad smiled at her and laid down on the bed.
The bed seemed empty without his beautiful wife. But Sinbad decided that he had to be strong. Maeve had been strong during her whole pregnancy without Sinbad.
"Maeve," he whispered, "I love you, wherever you are."
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
When Sinbad woke up, he dashed up-deck with Elora and ordered everyone into a longboat.
"Sinbad, calm down. If Maeve is here, we'll find her." Firouz was desperately trying to calm Sinbad down as they rode to the shore.
Once the were on the beach, Sinbad ran to the forest with his friends trailing behind him
"How can he still run that fast with a baby in his arms?" Doubar panted.
Firouz shrugged. As soon as Doubar , Firouz, and Rongar caught up with Sinbad, they were ambushed by some unpleasant visitors.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Maeve was awakened by the sound of Kitra rushing into her tent. Maeve sat up and looked at her face. It was filled with victory.
"What's wrong?" she asked.
"Now is your chance to prove yourself a real amazon. We've caught some intruders." Kitra said proudly.
Maeve didn't like the idea of killing a man, but she smiled anyway. She didn't want Kitra to think that she didn't have what it took to be an amazon.
"Come on." Kitra said as she opened the flap of the tent.
Maeve walked out and they both went through the village. Kitra stopped and pointed to a large tent.
"That's where the prisoners are. They were all on a ship near our coast. A few of them were even wandering through our woods." Kitra said.
"Can I go and look at them?" Maeve asked. She didn't know why, but she had a strange feeling about them.
Kitra nodded to an amazon who was guarding the tent. Maeve walked in and saw about twenty men inside. They were all tied up around the tent. She looked at them, and cleared her throat to let them know she was there.
"Maeve!"
Maeve turned to face a handsome man with sea blue eyes. They were filled with love and concern. She narrowed her eyes.
"My name is Leila. You all trespassed on our land, and soon you will pay the consequences." she turned and left the tent.
"Maeve!" Sinbad called pleadingly after her.
"Sinbad," Firouz began, "she didn't appear to recognize us. Maybe when she fell off the Nomad the other night she hit her head, causing her amnesia."
Sinbad looked at his friend, who was sitting next to him. "Is it permanent?"
Firouz shook his head. "Most cases usually disappear on their own within a few days."
"We have to get her to remember us soon, or those Amazons are going to kill us!" Doubar reminded.
Sinbad was actually more concerned about his daughter. The Amazons had taken the baby somewhere, and Sinbad was worried about her safety.
Almost as if reading his thoughts, Firouz spoke up. "Don't worry, they won't harm Elora. She's a girl." he said soothingly.
"No offense, Firouz, but that doesn't make me feel a whole lot better." Sinbad said.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Maeve walked over to the campfire. A few Amazons were seated around it eating their dinner. She took a seat beside Kitra.
"Tomorrow is your chance to prove yourself. A one-on-one fight to the death with the men's leader." Kitra said proudly. "I'm sure you'll do great."
"Kitra," Maeve began, "I don't think I could-"
"And when you win, you'll even get your own official Amazon mask." Kitra interrupted.
Maeve forced a fake smile. "Thanks." she said quickly. "I'm going to my tent for the night."
Kitra patted her friend on the back and watched her go back to her tent. "You'll need a good night's sleep for tomorrow, Leila." she called.
Maeve entered her tent and through herself down on her bed. She didn't know what to do. She wanted to become an Amazon and make Kitra proud, but she didn't want to kill the men. Unsure of what to do, she closed her eyes and went to sleep.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
The next morning, the crew was awakened to the sound of Kitra entering the tent. They all looked at her curiously, wondering what was going to happen.
"Which one of you men is the leader?" she demanded.
"That would be me. And who might you be?" Sinbad said confidently.
"I am Queen Kitra, leader of this tribe of Amazons." she said.
"My name is Sinbad, and these are my crew. You see, we may have trespassed here on your island, but it was only because we were-"
"Enough!" Kitra yelled. "You, Sinbad, are going to fight to the death with one of my Amazons. You can say your last good-byes now. We'll come and get you in a little while." Kitra then turned and left the tent, leaving the crew alone.
"There's no way I'm going to let those women kill you, Little Brother." Doubar said.
"Maybe there's still some time to fix this problem before it ends in someone's death." Sinbad suggested hopefully.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Kitra came into Maeve's tent, smiling. "Rise and shine, Leila. We have a big day today."
Maeve pulled her pillow over her head. "I don't think I'm up to killing anyone today." she said quietly.
Kitra sat down next to Maeve on the bed. "You'll do great, just come on outside. We have a huge breakfast in honor of you for becoming an Amazon."
Maeve forced a smile. She decided not to tell Kitra that she wasn't going to kill the men yet. Maeve figured she could figure out something to do during breakfast.
As she walked out of her tent, she was greeted by all of the Amazons. They were all outside eating the breakfast. Haley walked up to Kitra and Maeve.
"Aren't you excited about today, Leila?" she asked with a smile.
"Well, actually..." Maeve stopped talking as she saw an Amazon carrying an adorable red-haired baby.
The child was crying loudly, and the woman was trying to calm her down. Maeve walked over to her and smiled at the baby.
"Can I hold her?" she asked.
Maeve didn't know why, but there was something very familiar about this baby. The Amazon nodded and handed her the child.
As soon as the woman handed her to Maeve, she stopped crying. Maeve wiped the baby's tear stained cheeks and slowly rocked her in her arms.
The baby looked up at Maeve and smiled. "Mama!" she declared proudly.
Maeve smiled at her. "No, I'm not your mother." she said quietly.
The baby narrowed her eyes at her. "Mama." she said again.
The woman walked back over to Maeve.
"Is this your baby?" Maeve asked her.
The Amazon shook her head. "She was with the group of men we captured."
Maeve suddenly remembered that man with the sea blue eyes. The way he had looked at her, it was as if he knew her. He had called her Maeve. She knew that she had to see him again, maybe he knew who she really was.
"Would you like to take care of the baby for a little while? She seems to like you."
Maeve smiled warmly at the woman. "Yes, I would. Thank you."
Maeve propped the baby on her hip and ran over to the tent with the men in it. Two Amazons were guarding the front. Maeve snuck around to the back of the tent and crawled underneath.
"Maeve!" Sinbad exclaimed.
She put a finger up to her lips to silence him. She then walked over to him and untied his hands. He pulled Elora into his arms and hugged her tightly. He then smiled at Maeve and pulled her into a kiss. At first she began to pull away, but then she remembered him. She pulled away quickly.
"Sinbad!" she realized.
Then she pulled him into a hug and ran her hands through his thick, silky hair.
"Hey, could you help the rest of us now?" Doubar whispered loudly.
Maeve smiled and ran over to her friends. In a matter of minutes, everyone was free. Elora crawled over to Maeve and snuggled up against her.
"Leila? Where are you?"
Maeve's smile suddenly dropped as she heard Kitra calling her.
"I have to go now." Maeve said quickly. "I'll straighten this whole mess out."
She scooped Elora up into her arms and crawled out the back of the tent. She walked over to her tent and waved Kitra over.
"There you are!" Kitra declared. "I've been looking all over for you! Where have you been?"
"Just around." Maeve replied. "Kitra, I need to talk to you-"
"Are you almost ready to fight-"
"Now!" Maeve demanded. "I need to talk to you now."
Kitra nodded and reluctantly followed Maeve into her tent. Maeve sat down on the bed and sat Elora on her lap. Kitra took a seat next to them.
"Who's that?" she asked, motioning towards the baby.
"This is my daughter, Elora." Maeve said.
"Leila, you got your memory back?" Kitra said happily.
Maeve nodded. "Yes, I did. My name is Maeve, and I sail on a ship called the Nomad. The men that you captured, they are my friends, part of the crew with me. And the Captain, Sinbad, he's my husband."
"What about the fight?" Kitra said, her face hardening.
"There doesn't need to be a fight!" Maeve explained. "What will killing a man prove?"
"That they can't dominate us!" Kitra replied.
"They don't!" Maeve said. "Or at least, most men don't. There are places that men do everything, but not all men do that."
"What are you saying?" she asked.
"I'm saying that you don't need to kill them. You don't need to fight them. Not all men are bad and dominating. You have all turned into the men you hate by trying to dominate them! If you tried, I'm sure you could live peacefully with men, as their equals." Maeve explained.
Kitra slowly nodded. "I guess we have become the men we despise. What should we do about it?"
"Well, first you could free my friends." Maeve suggested.
"Good idea." Kitra agreed.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Sinbad extended his hand out to Kitra. She slowly took it in her own, remembering the last time she had shaken hands with a man.
Kitra nodded to Firouz, Rongar, and Doubar. Rongar was holding Elora in his arms. The rest of the crew had already returned to the ship. She turned to Maeve last.
"I'm going to miss you. But I will always remember what you did for us." she said. "A few of my Amazon sisters and I are going to pay a visit to the men's village. We're going to apologize for acting the way we did towards them."
Maeve smiled and embraced her friend. "I'm going to miss you too, Kitra. I'll be sure to come and visit you soon."
"You're sure you don't want to stay?" she asked.
Maeve shook her head. "I don't belong here."
"Of course you do. You brought the Amazons and men back together. You are the key to both of our worlds, Maeve." Kitra explained.
"I'll visit you soon." Maeve promised.
"Make sure that you do." she said as turned back into the village.
Maeve waved to her and watched until Kitra disappeared inside the village. Sinbad walked up and put a hand on Maeve's shoulder.
"What happened to your other dress?" he asked.
Maeve looked down at her normal brown and white Celtic dress. She had given her leather one back to Kitra earlier that day.
"I left it where it belongs." she relied.
"Where do you belong, Maeve?" he asked hesitantly.
Maeve smiled and hugged her husband. "I belong with you, Elora and the Nomad."
"Good answer." Sinbad said as he gently kissed her. "Now let's all go back to the Nomad. It looks like smooth sailing ahead!"
