Legacy Project - Ag Science Day

Megan Maenius

The Agricultural Communications class prepares a presentation on a topic related to agriculture that they choose.  On a day in the spring, the high school students will go down to the elementary school and present their presentation to the students.  This day in the past was known as Farm Safety Day.  I helped come up with the new idea of changing the day from Farm Safety Day to Ag Science Day.  This change would have the students prepare a 20 minute lesson on a science topic related to agriculture for a certain grade.  The high school students will also have to create an activity the elementary students can do, in order to take something home.  Previously they would present their 5 minute presentation to all grades and this year they would only prepare materials for one grade.  The high school students were required to contact organizations to help with materials, provide teaching materials to the elementary teachers and gather materials needed for their lesson and activity.  I gathered all of the group’s sources, materials for the teacher packets, materials given out on Ag Science Day and prepared a reflection from the whole class.  I gathered all the information needed to put on Ag Science Day into a binder that would be better for Mrs. Loerwald to find next year.  I also thought of some additional ideas that would be appropriate for the following years.  Florence High School teamed up with the Texas Farm Bureau to help make this day such a success.
