Duplicity by Maeluiril

Chapter 06

Days passed and Haldir was busy with other things not having visited any of the fellowship again. He had daily reports given to him on jessicas training and any other notes of interest from other members of the fellowship. Reading the report on jessicas training his eyebrow arched when his warden said that she was unrelenting and driving. a human female? he thought. Deciding he would see how her training was going himself he left to find her.

He approached the ring quietly wanting to observe her skill. From what he had gathered from legolas she had only been training for a few months before they left on the quest and any spare time on their wonderings. Though the same was for the hobbits. The elf she was sparing with was one his younger guards. She was already sweating heavily and he wondered how long they had been practicing. Her clothes were covered in dirt and smudges suggesting that she had taken more than one tumble.

The guard advanced on her and she took a step back raising her sword to deflect the blow. She kicked out and surprised him sending him back a bit. It didnt do much but there were a few snickers from the other elves around. He saw the anger boil in the guards eyes and he blocked her clumbsy attack before launching his own assault. Haldir was about to step forward and call it to a hault but it was already too late. He had disarmed her and caused her to fall back. She landed hard and her head slammed against a nearby tree root. She didnt get up. He ran over to her and saw that there was blood.

How could you be so inexcusably stuipd! he snapped to the guard she had been fighting. He started to make some excuse but haldir ignored him.

Child. He said turning her head slighly. Jessica wake. He pulled open her eyes and was releived to see the pupils still reacted to light. She moaned and tried to move her head. Jessica wake up. He said louder. She moved again and tried to push his hands away though her attempt was uncoordinated and weak. Go fetch a healer now! he screamed to the guard who was still standing there dumbly. The guard sprinted away like orcs were after him.

Jessica open your eyes.

Jessica abre los ojos. Haldir was getting beyond conerned at this point and gently slapped her cheek. It got a reaction but more of one than he would have hoped.

Dont ever fucking hit me again! she snarled and sat up quickky grabbing his tunic in a fist. Haldir? she asked confused and promptly vomited all over both of them. She leaned forward and pressed her head against his shoulder. tired.

Keep her awake! Haldir looked up and saw a healer running to them. He looked back to jessica and saw her eyes lulling shut.

Jessica, jessica. He said shaking her slighly. She opened her eyes.

Stop spinning. She said looking to him.

Valar, that will hurt her. said the healer looking at jessicas wound. Is she aware? asked the healer.

She recognized me but other than that I do not know. He said shifting her in his arms.

Well find out. he said angrilly as he pressed a cloth to the bleeding wound on the side of her head. Jessica hissed and pulled away from him.

Jessica, who am I? he asked.

Well if you dont know me telling you isnt going to solve your issues. She said her eyes closing again.

Humor me. He said with a small smile.

Haldir of lorien. Brother to rumil and orophin. Arrogant but hot. She said her eyes drifting shut.

Who are you? he asked.

No one important. He frowned and her head fell back her eyes shutting.

Jessica! he said loudly. Her eyes opened and he moved his arms to support her neck.

Stop yelling. She said harshly glaring at him. hurts.

I know but you must stay awake. She sighed.

Wanna sleep.

You can after you answer some questions.

shoot. He didnt understand why she chose that word but took it as cue to go on. Where are you?

with elves. She said looking to him like he was stupid.

Which relm? he asked. She looked to him confused for a moment.

Rohan? her eyes got big. Oh god there are no elves at helms deep. Dont let the elves go to helms deep! She tried to get up but he held her easily.

We are not at helms deep, relax. He said soothingly.

Oh, okay. Haldir Im gonna be sick again. He only had her sitting up before she puked again. Covering both of them even more, the healer moved out of the way recognizing the signs. Im sorry. She said and started to cry.

It will wash. He sighed and looked to the healer. She is slightly disoriented but knows most of the basics.

That is good. he said. Pick her up and go to healers talain. I will run ahead and prepare. Do not let her loose conciousness.

EARTHQUAKE! said jessica alarmed as he moved her.

What is an earthquake? He asked as he started walking.

Techntonic plates shift on a fault and the earth moves. San Fransisco is a bad place to live unless you have insurance.

Where is San Francisco? he asked.

California. She said. Really really far away. On the other side of the country. She started to drift again.

Jessica talk to me you must stay awake. He said.

God damnit haldir I want to go to sleep. She said getting angry. He chuckled sightly.

You can not. You have a head injury, it would not be wise.

I dont care. No one else does why should I? He frowned at her words.

I care.

Im sure whatever happened wasnt your fault. She said. You wont get in trouble.

That does not matter. He said readjusting her. If you fall asleep you may not wake.

Sounds tempting. She mumbled out and closed her eyes again.

Jessica wake up. He said commandingly, she didnt open her eyes. WAKE! she winced.

Fuck haldir that hurt! she yelled.

Then do not close your eyes again. He could see the healers talain and was slightly releived. You want to be awake when your friends visit do you not? he asked. She laughed.

They wont visit. She said shaking her head slightly.

Of course they will. He said.

Theyll want to. But majesty will talk them into letting her come alone. For my sake or some shit like that. Then shell just tell me how stuipid I was. Stupid, alone, scared, pathetic, worthless. She sighed. I dont want her to visit. Haldir frowned.

Surley your friends will visit. He said climbing the stairs.

they dont give me food unless I remind them Im breathing why would they come see me when Im hurt? she asked and started moving trying to get away from him.

Still child. I do not want to drop you. He said strengething his grip on her. She just sighed and went limp. She started sniffing and wrinkled her nose.

Do I smell that bad? she asked turning her head. He laughed quietly.

You vomited on both of us. He answered.

Oh. She sighed again. Sorry. She started to drift again.

wake. He said as he reached the healers.

Im awake sadist! she said angrilly.

Take her to the bath and strip. She needs to be cleaned. He said. Haldir nodded and went back to the bath. He laid her down on a bench and took his own tunic and undershirt off first. He threw them to the side with a grimice.

At least I now have evidene that you have been eating. He said reaching for the ties on her tunic.

Its very good. She said with a small nod.

Yes, very good. He said pulling the soiled tunic off her carefully. She blinked and looked to him then blinked again.

Haldir. He looked to her. Haldir you dont have a shirt on. He chuckled.

No, mine was covered with your breakfast and possibly reminants of dinner. She shook her head.

Nope late to dinner last night. He frowned again and sighed. He wondered how they could treat her as they did. Breakfast was good. She said.

They should not neglect you like that jessica. He worked her undertunic out from her pants.

Its not neglect so much as. . they just dont remember about me. She gave a small shrug. Who would when majesty is there? Im surprised they didnt leave me behind somehwere yet. She laughed a little. I could pull a home alone act. I wonder which one would remember first.

What is a home alone act? he asked to keep her talking.

Home alone. Parents accidently leave a kid at home when they leave to go on a holiday, a vaction. They go away and leave him, just forget he exists. Of course in the movie he thwarts two theifs in a variety of hillarious ways and his mom comes home frantic to get there. She loved him. She sighed. It wouldnt workt that way for me. When his hands went to pull her undertunic off she resisted slightly.

How would it work for you? he asked pulling the shirt off leaving her wearing a shirt in a style he had never seen. It covered her but had only thin straps across her shoulders to hold it up.

Orcs would kill me. . . or something. She tried to roll around but he held her down on the bench. What are you doing?

You need to be cleaned. He said. We both do. Before she could say anything the healer came back.

Help me sit her up. he said. Haldir picked her up and rested her against his chest. Her head rolled on his shoulder and the healer gently repsoitioned her and put a cup to her mouth.

Not thirsty. She said trying to push him away.

It is to help the pain and swelling. If she takes it she can sleep. Haldir nodded.

It is for your pain jessica. He said.

Not thirsty. She said again and moved away from the cup.

If you drink it all you can go to sleep. He said she opened her eyes and looked at him.

Promise? she asked.

Yes I promise. He said with a smile.

Okay. She turned to the cup and after a few minutes they were able to coax all if it down her throat.

Will you bathe her or do you wish for another to do it? asked the healer looking to haldir.

I will do it. he said. I need to clean besides. the healer nodded.

I will have clothing sent up for both of you. The healer took the cup and set it aside before turning her head and taking a better look at the cut along her hairline below her ear.

Will she heal? asked haldir.

Yes, she will have to be watched for the next couple of days. Bed rest, though tonight she will have to be woken every hour to make sure she is still coherent. he sighed. It will be a nasty bump but it should be healed within a few days at most. Haldir looked back to her and she was already asleep. I will inform the Lord and Lady as well as her group.

Thank you. the healer nodded.

I will leave you now. Another will bring your clothes. Haldir nodded and laid her back down as the healer left. He finished undressing her and frowned at the amount of bruises he found on her body. He wondered how hard she had been training and berated himself for his own stupidity. He should have taken her training in his own hand. Quickly he stripped the rest of his clothes and picked her up walking down into the bathing pool.

He laid her down in one of the seats built into the pool specifically for bathing patients that were either unconcisous or unable to do it themselves and left to get supplies. He bathed her quickly, making sure to get her clean before turning to himself. He grimiced when he found some reminants of her breakfast in his hair but cleaned it out. He looked up when another elf entered.

Your clothes lord haldir. she said setting them to the side. We have had a bed prepared and I will take her when you are done.

That will be unnecessary. he said. She is my responsiblitiy I will take her to the designated talain.

Very well. she said. I shall inform those necessary. She pulled another pouch out from her belt and set it atop the clothes. Herbs to treat the cut on her head. You will find bandages in the other room. haldir nodded and then rinced his hair.

Will you please take those to the laundry. she looked over to the pile of clothes and wrinkled her nose.

Perhaps it would be best if they were thrown out. she said going over to them. Haldir sighed.

You are correct. he said knowing they were probably stained beyond salvage. She nodded.

I will take care of them. she took them as she left. Haldir looked back to jessica and picked her up leaving the pool. He would have to get her new clothes as he was sure those were the only ones she had. After getting out of the pool and setting her down he dried both of them and dressed her then himself.

Carefully he re-cleaned and bandaged her wound. It was still bleeding but he knew that head wounds had a tendancy to do that. The herbs would help stop the blood. He picked her up and went to the talain. She never woke or stired once. He set her in the bed gently and manuvered her around so he could pull the covers over her then settled in for a long night.

He was reading a book when the first visitor came. It was suvel. She fussed over jessica and made sure that she was being taken care of even though the girl was still unconcious. He was surprised to learn that she had been helping in the kitchens everynight after dinner. Before Suvel left she promised to have some soup sent to Jessica and a tray of food sent to him for dinner.

Before the third time he had to wake her it seemd that every elf she had spent any amount of time with had come to check on her, including the elf that had caused her injury. Still, none from the fellowship had even come by. He found that odd and rather disconcerting. They were supposedly friends sworn to protect each other yet they did not even bother to see one of their own when she was injured.

By the fourth hour Galadriel had come to visit. She was siting on the bed gently brushing through jessicas hair. Haldir looked up from his book and watched them curiously. It was almost as if she was caring for kin.

He wondered on it. From the conversations that he had with jessica it seemd as though she had gained the favor of everyone she had met though she did not see it as such. Elrond had given her a mithril sword from his own house collection. The twins had gifted her with a journal and writing utensils. It was highly unlike them. She brushed both off as nothing. Arwen had even given her an ankle bracelte though she kept it attatched to a loop inside her pack for safekeeping.

Do you have questions Haldir? asked galadriel not looking up from the brush running through jessicas hair.

My lady I do not mean to be so rude. he said sitting up slightly. Galadriel only smiled and looked to him.

Curiosity is not rudeness, I thought I had taought you that. she said setting the brush aside. He looked to her for a moment and then down to jessica.

It is time to wake her again. he said. She nodded and moved away slightly allowing Haldir to approach jessica. He put his hand on her shoulder and shook her slightly. Jessica, you must wake. It took a few moments but her eyes opened and focused on him.

Haldir I thought I told you not to wake me up again. She said a little grogilly. He smiled.

Yes that was our conversation last time.

Well then what the fuck! she said pushing his hand away. She went to turn and groaned when her head moved.

Who are you? he asked still grinning but putting a soft hand on her forhead.

Im going to be the last thing you see on arda if you wake me up again. But her tone held no anger. Gladriel chuckled softly and haldir looked to her with a small smile. Such venom. He said. I will not stop what did you say. . bugging you until you answer. He said moving his hand away. She sighed not opening her eyes.

Jessica. She answered.

And where are you?

Hell. This time both haldir and galadriel chuckled.

Jessica. He said warningly.

Lothlorien, middle earth, arda, pergitory. She opened her eyes and looked to him. Take your pick.

Do you remember what happened?

No. she answered. But seeing as how my head feels about ten times larger than it should I would think I have received a head injury.

Yes, while you were training. He said.

I didnt hurt anyone else did I? she asked her eyes snapping open. It was the same every time he told her. She was always concerned that she had hurt another.

No, no one else was injured. He said softly. She relaxed and shut her eyes.

good. He sighed and looked to galadriel. She smiled gently at him and motioned to continue.

One last question. She opened her eyes and looked to him. He held his hand with three fingers up infront of her. How many fingers do I show? he asked.

Three. Can I go to sleep now? he smiled.

Yes. She promptly closed her eyes and fell back asleep.

She will be fine. said galadriel. Haldir sat back on his chair.

Why does the fellowship not visit her? he finally asked. Galadriel looked to him.

They are blinded. she answered.

Blinded? he asked.

Easily it seems. she sighed and looked back to jessica. We had hoped it would not be the case.

the ring? he asked confused.

Perhaps. she said. He looked to jessica.

I am sorry for allowing this to happen. If she still wishes to train when she recoveres I will handle it personally.

It was not anyones fault. It was an accident. she said. Though I believe you handling her personally for the rest of her stay is the best course of action at this point.

If I may ask one more question. Galadriel looked to him and nodded. Why was she allowed on this quest? I know that she is not of this world, the same as Majesty. But Majesty is much better prepared. She can fight, it seems there is nothing she can not do.

Yes she is beautiful, amazing, and perfect is she not? said galadriel. And yet, I have not seen her do half the deeds that jessica has. she said.

Through your mirror? he asked. Galadriel looked to him.

I have not seen anything of Jessicas past in my mirror. she answered. I speak of her time here. He looked to her confused again. You have not seen them together much. There is not much of a comparison when you do. He looked to her and admitteed she was right. Next to Majesty Jessica wouldnt even register. Where majesty was beautiful jessica was plain, where majesty was skilled Jessica was not. Perhaps haldir you should retrieve her things from the fellowship. Tell them that she will heal.

You mean they do not even know that she is stable? he asked sharply.

They only know that she was injured during training. she said. I will watch her until your return. Galadriel looked back to jessica. She will want her journal when she is capable of remaining awake. Haldir stood.

I will go get her things. he said. Galadriel nodded and started brushing jessicas hair again.
