Camel & Dive Safari to Ras Abu Galum
Back in '97 I went into the Thar desert in Rajastan, India onboard a camel and swore no more camels. Obviously, memory fades! I was presented the opportunity to load my tanks and scuba gear onto a lumbering camel and head out to the dive sites at a Bedouin camp called Ras Abu Galum. Generally, I'm comfortable on camels. My ass, however, does not fare as well by the end of the day (the trick is to sit cross legged whenever possible). And it's a bit of a challenge to keep your legs out from between the rocks and swinging scuba tanks! But it was gorgeous rocking along the shore of the Red Sea with the sculpted red mountains beginning a few feet to my left and the sea licking at the soft, padded camel feet.

Scuba tanks Getting ready
Note the scuba tanks in the camel bags. Sweating in 38-40 degree heat, we happily eased from the pale desert sands to the vibrant corals beneath the waves.

The light sifting through the moon jelly makes it look alien.

I think there are too many pictures of me on this page. I'll try to find a different one. Soon enough, our tender behinds were back aboard the swinging step of the camels and heading back.
