Driving Directions from Boston/Connecticut/New York:
I-95 North to Portland Maine, and from there to Augusta. It's ~100 miles from the Maine border to Augusta.
You can continue on I-95 to Augusta, or shortly after Portland loop on I-495 via Freeport, returning to I-95 shortly before Augusta. We usually take the I-495 option as we find (feel?) it to be slightly faster, and this gives us the option of a rest-stop in Freeport (several coffee shops, and of course L.L.Bean). Except for a Service Area, there is no good stop on I-95 between Portland and Augusta.
Bypass Augusta via the new bridge one exit north of the town. There is nothing worth stopping for. Cross over to Route 1 at Belfast. This is approximately 60 miles. There are no good stops between Augusta and Belfast (it gets better from here!).
Take Route 1 from Belfast, through Searsport and Bucksport, to Ellsworth. This is approximately 40 miles. About 1-2 miles before Searsport, on the right, is Moose Point State Park. This is a good picnic spot (tables by the water) and a place for the kids to run around.
At Ellsworth, you'll drive up the main street (several good restaurants) and turn right onto Route 3 for Bar Harbor, Mount Desert Island. There's a commercial strip at this point, with several food-markets. Our favorite is Hannaford's. There is also a very good Hannaford's on Cottage Street in Bar Harbor. We tend to either hit the Ellsworth Hannaford's on our way to the house, or bring enough supplies to wait until the next morning to drive into Bar Harbor. Once we drive on-island, we rarely leave until the trip home. |

The following are detailed driving directions from when you get to Mount Desert Island.
Traveling on Route 3, cross the causeway onto Mount Desert Island.
Immediately on the island, there's a set of lights. Route 3 bears off to the left (Bar Harbor). Keep straight on Route 102 for Southwest Harbor.
You'll pass through Somesville. Look out for Somesville One-Stop (good convenience store); Port in a Storm bookshop on left; much-photographed picturesque little bridge on right.
Coming into Southwest Harbor, look out for the Boat Launch and Beach entrances to Echo Lake.
A few landmarks in Southwest Harbor: L.S. Robinson is in the middle of town, on the left just before the junction. Sawyer's Wine and Cheese Market is on the left, beyond the junction. Sawyer's Market is on the right, opposite L.S. Robinson. This is a very good food store for fresh meat, fish, vegetables and bread. Little Notch bakery is next to Sawyer's. Excellent local bread (also available in Sawyer's Market). Head of the Harbor Restaurant is on the left, leaving Southwest Harbor. This is a favorite lunch or casual dinner spot - great seafood, outdoors, spectacular view.

Drive through Southwest Harbor, remaining on Route 102 - heading for Tremont. Note where Route 102A loops off to the left, then rejoins Route 102. Down here you'll find BassHarbor (restaurants), Bass Harbor light-house, Wonderland and Ship Harbor trails, and the gravel beach at Seawall.
Drive through Tremont (a school, a church, a few houses). You're getting close... start looking for the turnoff: Pass a sign for AC Parsons Garden Center (on left) - this is Richtown Road. Remain on Route 102, passing Quietside Campground (on right). Richtown Road is a loop - you'll shortly pass it again to your left. The next turnoff is cul-de-sac into some houses and a boat-ramp.
Going down a hill, Clark Point Road is a turnoff to the left. Our house is about the fourth on the left - gray siding, blue shutters, white picket fence. |
