Tim Brown: A True Raider

He held up the history, the tradition ... all our old-time players always knew it, that he was symbolic of what I call the Greatness of the Raiders. That's Tim Brown.

Al Davis

Tim Brown began his career with the Los Angeles Raiders in 1988.  After winning the Heisman Trophy in 1987 with Notre Dame, Timmy proved that it was no fluke when he won the NFL's Rookie of the year award.  Tim, a gifted athlete, made quite a impact during his rookie season.  He led the Raiders in receptions with 43 for 725 yards, averaging 16.9 yards per catch.  He also topped the league with 41 kickoff returns for 1,098 yards, averaging 26.8 yards a return.  For good measure, Tim led the AFC with 49 punt returns for 444 yards. Moreover, he scored 5 touchdowns on receptions, 1 TD on a run, and added another TD on a kickoff return.  Finally, Tim become only the third Raider (up to that time) to be named to the Pro Bowl.  One of his career highlights was his 97 yard kickoff return for a touchdown during the season opener against San Diego. Scroll down for more pics and Brown's career stats.

In 1999 , Tim recorded his seventh consecutive campaign with 80 or more catches and in 2000 Tim had his eighth straight 1,000 season.  Tim has made eight Pro Bowl trips, and owns the Raider records for most receptions in a season along with the most receiving yards in a season.  The All-Time leading receiver in Raider history is also the only man in Raider history to score on a run, a reception, a kickoff return and a punt return.

However a horrible knee injury on opening day in 1989 ended Timmy's season.  The injury kept him off the field for almost two years.  It wasn't until 1992 that Tim Brown became a regular starter.  Throughout his career Tim has caught passes from over twelve different quarterbacks and seen some really bad Raider teams.  But he has stuck with LA/Oakland when he could have easily went to another team.  He is the Raiders All-Time leading in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns.

Brown has always been reliable and the future Hall of Famer is one of only a handful of men to catch 800+ balls.  Against Buffalo on 10/17/99, Tim became the 16th NFL player to reach 10,000 receiving yards.   Brown is the complete receiver and is one of the most underrated men in NFL history.  He runs precise routes, catches well and makes plays downfield.  He is one of my favorite players and may be the greatest receiver in Raider history.  Brown is the Raider all-time leader in touchdowns scored with 100 breaking Marcus Allens team mark of 99.  Brown broke the record on a 88 yard punt return during the 2001 season.  Timmy was adapt at punt returns, he is the Raiders all-time leading punt return in both punt returns and yardage.  In 2002, Brown became only the third player in NFL history to catch 1,000 passes in his career.  In 2003 Brown and the Raiders struggled to a 4-12 record and Timmy only managed to catch 52 passes and 2 touchdowns.  Just before the 2004 season, Brown was released and signed with Tampa Bay.  He finished his Raider career as the top guy in many of the Raiders statistical categories.

"That's not fair to the team," Brown said. "And that's the part I have to reckon with. I can't look at this from Tim Brown's point of view. I have to look at it from the Raiders' point of view."
