Lionel Washington: Underlooked in Silver and Black
During the early 1990's Raiders Cornerback Terry Mcdaniel grabbed all the headlines, made Pro Bowls and shut out opposing wide receivers. Meanwhile his counterpart was overlooked and under appreciated. Lionel Washington began his pro career with the St. Louis Cardinals and after four years with one of histories worst teams he was signed by Al Davis during the strike year of 1987. It was here that he began 8 of his nine seasons wearing the Silver and Black of the Raiders. Maybe he wasn't a shutdown corner but Washington's skills were spectacular. After 8 seasons as a Raider he spent two more with the Denver Broncos in 1995 and 1996. After that he returned and retired as a Oakland Raider in 1997 while picking off two passes and returning one for a touchdown. During his eight seasons as a Raider Washington picked off seventeen passes and returned three of them for touchdowns. He also became part of a small fraternity as a player who was a Los Angeles Raider and an Oakland Raider.
