You were once considering a medical career yourself. What changed your mind?
Well I had pretty much stopped playing music when I started at the University of Texas. I really didn't have enough time to really devote to studing and to music. I just started to miss playing music really badly. One day I went to see Kiss play at the Frank Irwin center and it just made me realize that I was missing out on my true passion. I figured I would take a leave from school for a year and play music and see what happened. I ended up joining Slaughter about a year later and things just kinda snowballed from there. Who knows, maybe someday I'll go back.
Medical students sometimes do poorly and working out and keeping in shape because of
time constraints. What's your secret to keeping in shape on the road!
Well I always try to keep in mind that your health is a top priority so I make time for excercise on the road. I usually run first thing in the morning or ride my bike or rollerblade. I try to get to a gym whenever I can but that isn't always possible so I bring some weights with me on the bus. I've also got a chin up bar that I put in the doorway hotel rooms. I do lots of isometric excercises. Crunches, hanging leg lifts, inverted push ups, resistance bands. Always looking for new ideas. Plus playing drums itself is pretty physical for me.
When you are not on the road, what is your typical workout schedule? How do you train
for adventure races?
I do a series of runs ranging from short fast sprints to distance runs. Try to get as much time as I can off road running. I try to ride bikes a few days a week on and off road and I've been doing a lot of swimming lately. I try to do strenghth training at the gym three days a week.
What CDs are in your stereo right now?
A couple of 80's compilations. The last Seal cd. Some country stuff. Kings X greatest hits. Pantera, Vulgar Display of Power. Jesus Christ Superstar Soundtrack.
What projects are you currently working on?
Touring with Slaughter. Planning a DVD release of the first two Slaughter home video's with new tour footage added. Training for adventure races.
Everyone has a favorite dish they love to cook. For example, I can't live without good
Mexican food and it's my favorite to cook. Do you have a recipe that you would be able
to share with us?
Actually most of what I eat at home is pretty simple and raw. My favorite is Mexican but I
definitely can't cook it!
What final thoughts or inspiration do you have for us jaded med students?
Remember what you started for. It's all about helping people. Change one person's life for the better and it will all be worth it.
Many, many thanks to Blas for being
metalmedicine.com's first interview!
