PREGNANT SMOKERS & BIRTHWEIGHTS

 

According to data released by the National Center for Health Statistics, the percentage of babies born prematurely�birth at less than 37 completed weeks of gestation�has risen to nearly 12 percent, the highest level ever reported in the United States (1999). Nationally, the percentage of low-birthweight babies increased from 7 percent to 7.6 percent, while the figure for preterm births rose from 10.6 percent to 11.8 percent.  From The Annie E. Casey Foundation: Nationally, the percentage of women who smoked during pregnancy decreased from 18.4% in 1990 to 12.6% in 1999.
