Dr. Irby and Cheryl Alford stayed two hours to answer questions about IEPs.  Thank you very much for giving so much of your time to help us.

Some highlights of their presentation:

Content of IEP should include the projected date for the beginning of the services and modifications and the anticipated frequency, location and duration of those services and modifications

And a statement of how the childs progress toward the annual goals will be measured

And how the parents will be regularly informed

PRESENT LEVEL OF PERFORMANCE or PLOP
Should accurately describe the effect of the childs disability on the childs performance in any area of education and progress in the general curriculm including academic areas like reading, math, communications, and in non-academic areas like daily life activities, mobility and others.

A well written PLOP will describe
your childs strengths and weaknesses
what helps your child learn and what limits or interferes with your childs learning
objective data from current evaluations of your child
how your childs disability affects his or her ability to be involved and progress in the general curriculm

Measurable annual goals should be included in IEPS

Dr. Irby and Ms. Alford discussed who attends the IEP meetings, what an LEA representative is- Local Education Agency.  Children should NOT attend the meeting.  The child doesnt need to see the poor behavior of the adults.  The child should not be talked over.  Parent participation needs a 10 day notice as a guideline.  A meeting can be conducted WITHOUT the parent attending if the public agency cant get the parents to attend.

Dr. Irby and Cheryl Alford had great information to share.  Handed out to those attending were:

Appendix A to Part 300 from Wrightslaw Guide to Smart IEPs from www.smartieps.com

IEP Review Checklist
Strategies for Writing Better Goals and Short Term Objectvies or Benchmarks
The Parent Press from SEAC
The ImPact  from SEAC with SEAC webpage http://home.hiwaay.net/~seachsv
