In Memory of our wonderful little girl who my husband lovingly called "His Sapphy" ~~ Little Sapphire came to us at 8 weeks old and she was a true going concern, she loved to romp and play and get into everything in site. We had to replace kitchen flooring, A table and chairs, livingroom carpet and a handmade wooden butler...well we didn't really replace the butler, we still have him, but he sure has had his leg chewed to bits..:) ~~ Even after all this our little Sapphire was a gem in our eyes, she was a True Blue Merle Beauty that every one loved. Around about two years old Sapphire was not seeming to be feeling very well and we thought that it would be best to find out what was wrong with our little going concern, so we took her to our Vet, Dr. Jim. Dr. Jim felt that there was a need to give her a battery of tests to see what was going on with her, so tests we had done. Dr. Jim felt that it could possible be cancer but the blood work and tests would tell us a story. So we waited for the tests to come back, but while we were waiting she failed even more and began to circle, wander and drool a lot....believe me this was frightening, I at first thought of rabies because of the foamy drool, but that is not what it was at all. While we were waiting for the tests to come back from Dr. Jim we took Sapphire to another Vet who knew us well, another Dr. Jim who refered us to Dr. Amanda in his office, and when she saw what was going on and what we had told her she felt it had to do with her liver and it was not good. Well that was it, we fell apart.... Finally the tests came back from Dr. Jim and they more or less confirmed Dr. Amanda's feelings of being a liver problem....We were told at the time because of the severity of it that it may be best to have our little girl put down....well the answer was a loud angry NO WAY. We asked what our options were and we were told that Sapphire could go down to Guelph University or London to have more tests done and possible surgery. We decided, no more tests on our girl, Surgery is what we want for her if it will help her. The appointment was made and a very fast and furious trip to Guelph the same day was made. When we got Sapphire to the University they told us that it did not look good for her at all and we were more or less losing her and we were not to feel bad if we decided to put her down....again our answer was NO. Plus we were told we could contact the Breeder for a replacement because this was a genetic defect....Again that was a NO also, because we loved her and she was our girl, we did not want a replacement, we wanted our Sapphire. You have to understand that our little girl knew who we were and every movement or step my husband took Sapphire followed him, even though she could not see him, she knew he was there and she followed him all over the examination room....so how could we let her go, some may think us cruel, but putting her to sleep would have been worse. We were told that they would flush her system and put her on some medication and see what the morning would bring, we wanted to stay with her, but they could not allow it....Let me tell you it was a very sad tearful trip back home leaving our little girl alone. The next morning we recieved a call from the specialist and she was amazed and so happy to report that Sapphire was back....well, we made a speedy trip back down to see our girl, and boy was she ever back, barking, jumping and kissing up a storm again. We were told that if we have decided to go with the surgery they could do it right away, we agreed and they prepared Sapphire for the ligation. We got a call right after surgery to say she was ok and time will tell. It wasn't two hours later we got a call that they were losing her fast and asked me what I wanted them to do.....I told them, don't you let her die, reverse the procedure immediately, which they agreed to do. We then made a trip to be with her and boy did our little one look terrible, tubes, wires, monitors all over the place. I talked to her, touched her and told her to come back to us, but the Specialist said the odds were very grim that she would and if she did come out of it we would only have at the most 6 months with her and it would maybe best to have her put down at that time, again I said NO. Well, the next day our little one was back and we rushed down again to be with her. She honestly did look awful, but she was back and very soon after that she was back to our Sapphire again. We were told that we could take her home in a week and she would need constant attention with expensive medication and special foods (Low Protein), but we must remember that she will only live at the most 6 months with these remedies. We finally got to bring our girl home and she was a going concern again...Our Sapphy was back. I won't go into long detail of her antics and playfulness, but I will tell you that Sapphire not only lived 6 months, she proved them wrong and lived another 3 years. Those three years were wonderful years with our girl that came home to us by a miracle of god. We certainly had a Guardian Angel looking over all of us. When Sapphire passed away it was the most devastaing time for us, we loved her so very much. We miss our little one, but the memories of her are endless. We had our little Sapphire cremated and she sits with us to this day in our home and watches over us and everytime we come home we always say Hi Sapphy. ~~ In Memory of our Little Girl "Sapphire" Thank You to the Veterinarians & Specialists who blessed us with our little girl who came back to us by a miracle. And to the Breeder who brought her into our lives.
