I want to begin by stating that I hate Wal-mart. Well, I don't hate Wal-mart as an institution of savings, but for its atmosphere and gratuitous and white-trash clientele. Secondly, I hate the "parenting oversight" they employ in their sales. It seems that Wal-mart has a policy that requires a person to be of a certain age to purchase paintballs. How ridiculous! First of all, if the parents of a 10 year old boy permitted him to buy a paintball gun, wouldn't they obviously also allow him to buy paintballs? Secondly, how would a 10 year old boy even get to Wal-mart if his parents, or someone old enough to make this purchase, didn't drive him? Large corporations have no business raising our children by regulating what they are and are not allowed to purchase. Wal-mart isn't alone on their attempt to be parents; Publix too tries on the parenting glove. It is a fact that Publix will not sell virgin Bloody Mary mix to anyone under the age of 21. The funniest part of this is that when my friend's purchase of this mix was refused, he headed back to the grocery aisles, picked up some tomato juice, Tabasco sauce and lime, and made his purchase. Now, I agree with oversight when it comes to buying alcohol or guns because these actions are regulated by state law; but, let the sellers of guns and alcohol do their jobs. Bottom line: It isn't Wal-mart's, Publix's or any other corporation's job to decide how parents raise their kids. |
