Tree Growth
Trees grow from both apical meristems and lateral meristems.  This causes trees to grow length-wise and width-wise.  Therefore, the tree grows around its branches; this causes the tight and loose knots found in lumber.  Loose knots fall out of the lumber because the branch is not attached to the piece of lumber, but rather it is attached to the middle of the tree.
