| Predatory Fungus | ||||||||
| Fungi are absorptive heterotrophs, which means they secrete digestive enzymes into their surroundings then absorb the decomposed molecules as food. The fungi use hyphae, tiny filaments composed of tubular walls, to complete this process. The soil fungus Arthrobotrys is a "predatory fungus;" its hyphae are hoop-like and can constrict nematodes (roundworms) in a fraction of a second. After taking it hostage, the fungus uses its hyphae to penetrate the nematode and digest its inner tissue! Wow. | ||||||||
