Alternative Perspective
Issue 5, October 22, 2002
Compiled byMadhukar Shukla

Introduction: Alternative Perspective is an attempt to widen our awareness about issues related to business, environment, role and influence of media, geo-politics, culture, etc. It aims to share, on a regular basis, some of those pieces of news and information, which do not find place in the highly monopolised mainstream media.

In This Issue:
  • The Economics of Consumption
As consumption becomes the key to - and measure of - national prosperity, more and more people get infected by Affluenza [You can also check your level of infection - please see also tips to beat Affluenza]. However, not only there is always a question of How Much is Enough, but also the fact that, after all, high consumption is no guarantee for happiness

  • Paul Krugman on War on Iraq
When politicians abondon the cause, intellectuals and others take it up... Economist Paul Krugman's criticism on the build-up for war on Iraq are also shared by another economist, Joseph Stiglitz, the winner of 2001 Nobel Prize. Actor Woody Harrelson's article on I'm an American tired of American Lies is also worth reading. And in case you missed it, you must also read the transcript of Harry Belafonte's interview on CNN (you will have to scroll down a bit - it starts after the transcript of first session).

  • Who is Mike Cameron?
Mike who???... well, just an ordinary adolescent, till he became an unwary victim/celebrity, when he got on the wrong side of commercialisation of education. While educational institutions may be new grounds for creating consumers, the process starts much earlier in life. This process of making of a consumer is as much prevalent in the developing countries, as it is in the more developed & affluent countries.

  • How Earth-Friendly Are You?
Take this quiz to find out!... if you score high, you will appreciate - perhaps already know about - The Living Planet Report 2002. If you score low - or decide to skip this item of this Newsletter - you perhaps agree with the opinions of Leon Louw of Free Market Foundation on Green Movement.

  • Micronationalism: Sussex Village claims Independence
When I came across this news item, I found it a humorous aberration... till I discovered that Micronationalism is a trend, perhaps even history in making. PRAWNS (People's Republic of Ashurst Woods Nation State), after all is not an exception!!! I found a number of such "experimental states", for instance:
  • The Principality of Sealand, an island off the coast of UK, which is even recognised as an independent state by European countries
  • The Hut River Province Principality in Australia
  • The Conch Republic in Florida
  • This small village in Mecdonia which claims to be a republic
... and even aCyber Yugoslavia which requires a visa to enter!!!
