Alternative Perspective
Issue 4, October 15, 2002

Introduction: Alternative Perspective is an attempt to widen our awareness about issues related to business, environment, role and influence of media, geo-politics, culture, etc. It aims to share, on a regular basis, some of those pieces of news and information, which do not find place in the highly monopolised mainstream media.

In This Issue:
  • Axis of Evil = Axis of Oil [pdf]
That wars are fought to gain control of resources is, of course, not a news - long back in 1933, US Army Major General Smedley Butler confessed that wars are driven by business motives (You can also read his book, War is a Racket, online). What, however, often does not feature in news is what happens after war ends, and "nation-building" takes over. Camp Bondsteel in Kosovo is a good example of one such partnership between business and army. In fact, as these two other news reports show - one from The Guardian and the other from San Fancisco Chronicle, that - whether Kosovo or Iraq - this partnership gets going even before the war starts.

  • Myths about Hunger
In this highly polarised world, where the number of people suffering from obesity equal the number suffering from hunger(!!), myths about hunger abound. It is also worth looking at the facts about poverty and hunger. And while there are rich and poor countries, poverty and hunger knows no boundaries, as this report on hunger in US highlights.

  • The Challenge of Terrorism
This article was written slightly more than a year back, in the wake of 9-11. Now, with Afghanistan behind us - and Iraq and Palestine looming ahead, (and the "terrorism" continues - whether in Bali or Helinski) it has become even more relevant. Perhaps, it is worth looking at this conflict not as a war between the civilized world and the rest, but in terms of understanding the motives of those who become terrorists, and of those who fight against it. After all - learning from immediate past history - it really does not make any rational sense, any more, to respond to terrorism with more terrorism!!.

  • History of Use of Bio-Chemical Agents on Human Beings
Though the oft-quoted Geneva Protocol banning the use of Bio-Chemical Weapons has been in force since 1928, such weapons not only exist, but have also been used regularly. Both Iraq and United States of America have used them on their own civilian population - and sometime even on the population of a friendly nation.

  • Humanity on Hold
A "blasphemous" presentation (nice music also), but it does surface a sometimes neglected angle to the Israel-Palestinian conflict. Even if one knew about these, there is no harm in, once again, being reminded of the facts.
