What is Meditation?

It is a conscious mental process of uniting with the God (present in all forms). It involves 'consciously' contemplating the functions of the senses, witnessing the nature of the mind, gradually growing in awareness and ultimately realising that we are the Universal energy itself …flowing through the body and acting through the senses!

Beginners often start meditation with too many expections, waiting for somthing to happen. When nothing happen they are disappointed and give up.

The Dalai Lama, who meditates for very long periods every day, recommends that all new practioners should start with short sessions , not more than five mintues at a time. These periods may be repeated several time & each time the attitude should be of relaxed stillness, expecting nothing but ready for anything.

The human mind is full of thoughts-random and never ceasing. If you realise that thoughts generally fall into three categories- remembering, planning & dreaming. If you are remembering, than you are lingering uselessly in the past, which can be both repetative & obsessive.Just let it go.Don,t get involved. If your mind is busy with planning ,you rae thinking of the future, your aims desire & hopes.Dreaming is self explanatory.Do not get involved.Let the thougths come & go without clinging to them.Five minutes is all you are allowing yourself, so there is no expectation,no strain.

The quality of meditation & not the duration is what you are interested in for the present.Meditation has been described as a mind suspended in space- a pure & complete awareness without clinging.

There are many aids to meditation .There is a mantra, which repeated in mind ,will eventually stop random thoughts. There is the candle flame or picture on which you can concentrate.Or you can simply concentrate on your breathing. All this methods are effective ,but only if you take it lightly, giving only 25% of your attention to them, with remaining 75% of your mind relaxed & floating in space.

At the psychological level, with regular meditation there is decreased anxiety,a higher level of relaxation at all levels, and progress towards self actualisation. The meditator begins to experience himself in a more positive way.

Regular meditation increase empathy, concern & interest in the well begin of others. In meditation alpha waves increase, reflecting an extremely restful, non anxious problem solving mental state. After successful meditation the person is relaxed , with a greater capacity, love and compassion.

Understanding Meditation Meditation is a blossoming of the divine consciousness within. Just as one falls into sleep, one slips into meditation. Meditation is not music therapy and nor is it rhythmical dancing
