Kevin walked into the lab where Jenna and Melinda were waiting, " Congratulations" he said, " we finally have a solid clue. I did an analysis on the daggers you brought me, the are made from the same metal composite and the daggers are the same length and the handle makes the same imprints on skin as the murder weapon."
" That's great now we just have to find a blonde white guy in LA" said Melinda.
" We can comb the beaches?" suggested Melinda, " work our way east."
" This case is going no where" grumbled Jenna, " we've hit a hundred dead ends for a couple of small leads."
" What about pawn shops?" asked Melinda, " guy is breaking into homes, maybe he is fencing the stuff so he can afford these pretty daggers."
" What about that guy in Sun City, Eddie Jones, you know more rodent than man" said Jenna, " we were looking at him for fencing stuff stolen from those two kids they found off Laurel dead."
" Yah, I remember him" said Melinda, " the guy has the mirror over the counter so he can look down women's shirts."
" Let's go pay him a visit" said Jenna, " maybe he might be able to point us in a the right direction."
" Ow!" yelped Ophelia, " you're sure you've done this before."
" Several times" said Jack, " I may not have one of those fancy degrees but so far nobody has died from me sewing them back together."
" Don't let me set the record" said Ophelia.
" Then stop squirming" said Jack.
Jack carefully sewed the three long cuts in the side of Ophelia's face, " Almost done" said Jack, finishing his sewing, " there all done."
Ophelia looked at the stitches in the mirror, " Okay, not bad" she said.
Malcolm was outside on the deck talking to Ebenezer, " Yes they've made their way back to the desert, I don't think we need to worry about them anymore" he said.
" But this alliance with the Markosas is troubling" said Ebenezer, " werewolves don't deal in human affairs, never have."
" It is the 21st century, everybody is adapting" said Malcolm, " thing cooled down in the city?"
" Yes, but we have had a new surprise" said Ebenezer, " the Order is back."
" The Order of the Holy Blade?" asked Malcolm, " I thought they fled because LA was a cesspool that was damned to burn. After a few summers here I'm not sure if that believe was misplaced."
" They announced themselves to me the day you left" said Ebenezer, " I think they are up to something."
" When do you want us back?" asked Malcolm.
" Take the rest of the week off" said Ebenezer, " you have earned it."
" We will" said Malcolm.
Malcolm hung up and walked inside, " How do I look?" asked Ophelia, showing off her new stitches.
" Like you need a bath" said Malcolm, cracking off a piece of dried mud from her shirt.
" Is that an offer?" asked Ophelia.
" It is" said Malcolm, " shall we?"
" I would love to" said Ophelia.
Beth parked her car a block from the café, and got out. It was getting hot, Beth now regretted wearing a black t-shirt today as sweat began to gather on the small of her back. Beth walked down the small side street off Hollywood Boulevard and then into a small alley. One the left side of the alley was a small basement staircase with a sign of a black cat on the brick wall next to the stairs. This was the Black Cat, not the most inventive name but this one of the big hang-outs for those who swam in the occult circles. Beth often visited here when trying to locate special orders for clients, if it was occult related somebody in this little place would know about it.
Beth walked into the dark club, her eyes trying to adjust to the transition from the bright sunny Los Angeles afternoon to near pitch black of the café. Beth could sense all the eyes in the room were eating up her body, probably best she could make any of the faces out. Beth made her way to the back of the tiny café and sat in the booth. " Its been awhile" came a soft voice from deep within the inky darkness of the booth.
" It has" said Beth, " how are things?"
" Troubling, things are moving, the hour glass has been turned" he said.
Beth was use to these riddles, she didn't even know his name but he was the most valuable source of information she had ever met. She liked to call him the Shadow, because she thought the mysterious name sounded appropriate. " What do you know about the murder in West Hollywood, the one in that New Age store?" asked Beth.
" A great deal and nothing" he said, " she was killed in the most ritualistic fashion, hacked open while still breathing. The things taken were for a purpose but for what purpose I have no clue. The pattern of the attack doesn't follow any group I know. What is your interest in this? Looking for a subject to finally write that book you always put off? I know you are an amazing writer, the things that swirl around you are the most interesting ideas for a book."
" Let's just say this has peaked my curiosity" said Beth.
" Yes" said Beth, " is there anything you can tell, any lead, no matter how small or insignificant."
" Sunset is where the Angels go to die" he said, " you might find clues on Sunset."
" Where?" asked Beth.
" Where the Angels go to die" he repeated.
Beth nodded, he told you want he wanted no amount of arguing would change that. Beth smiled, " Let's do this again" she quipped.
" We will, and soon" he said.
Beth got up and walked out of the café into the blinding afternoon light. She took her cell phone out and dialed the store, " The Doorway, this is Clover" said Clover.
" You should sound less bored when you pick up the phone" said Beth.
" Hey sis, how is your investigation going?" asked Clover.
" Okay, I need you to do me a favor" said Beth, " I want you to go clubbing tonight."
" I like that kind of favor" said Clover, " where?"
" Sunset, I want you to hit some of the raves and bars" said Beth, " but you aren't going to just hit on guys, I want you to talk to people, as if they have seen any unusual guys hanging around, then I want you to go to Inferno."
" Inferno, that freaky place?" asked Clover, " besides cover for that is like twenty bucks."
" I'll pay, it is a business expense, I just want you to ask around about weird guys that might be in a cult" said Beth.
" Ah Beth you are sending me to Inferno, there is nothing but weird guys in cults there" said Clover, " but if you're paying, I'll get a couple of my friends and go."
" Thanks" said Beth.
" Don't thank me, you paying me to go clubbing that is the kind of job I want" said Clover.
Beth hung up and climbed into her car, she drove up to Mulholland and sat in the hood of her car thinking as the sun cross the sky. Beth missed Jack, whenever he left to go on some mission with the Chosen she couldn't sleep. Jack was the best thing ever to happen to her, and if he died Beth didn't know how she could move on. Beth rubbed her tattooed arms, she was really worried this time, she hadn't heard from him all week. Beth knew she shouldn't, he might be in the middle of something, but her cell phone was right next to her. Beth reached for the cell phone but drew her hand back, then finally grabbed it off the hood of the car. She pressed 1 on the speed dial. It rang, and rang, and rang. Each ring making Beth more and more afraid, she began to conjure up images of his dead body rotting in some basement. Finally all her fears were abated when she heard, " Hey babe."
" Hi Jack" said Beth, " I was worried."
" Sorry" said Jack, " I was up in the mountains, not great service out there, how are you doing?"
" Worried you bum" said Beth.
" Don't worry, I'll see you tomorrow" said Jack, " you know, I was thinking, you know we've known each other for a few years now, and well, maybe you would like to move in with me? I found a nice house for the two of us, not too small, has a pool in back. It won't be too hard to make payments thanks to my generous hazard pay plan. So, how bout it?"
" Yes, yes I would love to" exclaimed Beth, " when can we buy it?"
" I sorta already did" said Jack, " I bought it the day I left, I had spent the week trying to figure out how to tell you."
" Oh Jack this will be perfect" said Beth, " this will be so perfect."
" I'll come by tomorrow and we can go see it" said Jack.
" Where are you right now?" asked Beth.
" It is a rather long story but the short version is I'm soaking in an associate producer's hot tub" said Jack.
" I'll have to hear the long version tomorrow" said Beth, " bye."
" Bye" said Jack.
Beth hung up and smiled, maybe things won't be so bad after all.
Jenna and Melinda both sat in Captain McCloud's office. Neither like this, it felt like they were in the principles office. " Still no suspects in the Marsh case?" asked James.
" It is a difficult case" said Melinda, " we have a lead on a possible suspect."
" Name?" asked James.
" Not yet" said Melinda, " we know he is blonde, between 20-30, and has a Boston accent."
" White blonde guy, that narrows it down" said James, " any luck with known associates?"
" The ones we were able to find said this girl was the sweetest, nicest person ever" said Jenna, " I doubt any of them would do that to her. I still think our suspect is the same guy that burglarized the place, but West Hollywood Robbery has no leads, clues or suspects."
" I'll put in a few calls to West Hollywood see if I can't get a fire lit under them" said James, " in the mean time take some time off and pick it up Monday."
" Thanks" said Melinda, " this has been a rough case."
The pair got up and both left the squad room.
Brother Shane checked his rifle for the tenth time, they were waiting for the go ahead signal. It had taken a week of searching to finally locate a nest of these godless bloodsuckers. He looked back at the others, they were ready, dress in their black combat armour with white crosses painted on the front of their bulletproof vests and on top of their helmets. Shane was intently listening to his radio in his helmet waiting for the signal to go. Shane heard "Amen" over the radio and new it was time to go.
" Where is Kyle man?" asked the first vampire.
" Dunno, he said he was bringing some chicks by" said the second, " he should be coming back from the beach."
" The beach" laughed the first, " I was watching one of those awful 70s horror movies on TV last night. I just love that can't go in the sun line, if those producers had any clue their heads would explode."
" No shit" said the second.
The pair sat on the old broken couch and started watching the TV with their pirated cable. Suddenly the door burst open and several heavily armed men entered with white crosses on their gear. The first vampire was shot in the head as he rose to his feet. The other rolled over the back of the couch and made a run for their guns in the kitchen. Bullets tore the living room up around him as he raced into the kitchen. He grabbed the shotgun from the counter and fired blindly into the living room. He emptied the shotgun blindly blasting at the attackers. He grabbed his two Colt 45s and opened the refrigerator. He grabbed the first bottle of blood and smashed the neck against the side of the refrigerator. He drank as fast as he could, he could hear them coming from both sides. He raised both pistols and aimed them at the walls. He squeezed both triggers and heard one scream, the other just fall. Bullets started ripping the kitchen apart, a bullet smashed in his shoulder, and another ripped into his neck. He let the blood rage take over and began to fire blindly as he charged towards the men. He shot and killed one, and wounded another before the others shot him down, riddling his corpse with sixteen bullets.
Shane lay on the ground, blood gushing from his shoulder, the pain was blinding. He felt his men dragging him from the house and back into the van before he blacked out.
Father Mathew sat in his study reading the report sent to him about their raid against what they had been told was a nest. This was a serious disappointment, only two vampires at the cost of two of his own dead and two wounded. Mathew heard his phone ring, he knew who it was and he didn't want to talk to him. But Mathew had no choice and picked the phone up, " I just heard your attack on the nest was less than successful" came the deep commanding voice of Cardinal Michael Delacroix, the Black Cardinal, head of the Order of the Holy Blade.
" We've just started" said Mathew, " you can't expect perfect results in only a week."
" True enough, but more importantly did you make sure Lord Dante knew it was you?" asked Michael.
" Yes" said Mathew, " we made sure to leak news of the attack shortly after it was concluded Dante does know it was us."
" Excellent" said Michael, " I want him to be constantly afraid, for now we will use those godless Chosen as our allies but soon we'll be strong enough there that we can finally take control of the city away from them."
" I agree" said Mathew, " but they must understand that it is going to take time, this is a large city with a large vampire population."
" I know that is why I am sending a specialist to assist you" said Michael, " she will really put the fear of God into those soulless beasts."
" I don't think we need one of them here" said Mathew, " not until I can get a better picture of the situation."
" This isn't your decision Father Carpenter" said Michael, " I decide where and when to send them, and I already have his seal on it."
" He gave you the seal of approval?" asked Mathew.
" His eminence is very concerned that our return to Los Angeles meets with better results than what happened that Halloween" said Michael, " I doubt we want that to occur again."
" Yes I think your right, when will she arrive?" asked Mathew.
" In two or three days" said Michael, " I know your position on them, but when fighting the legions of hell we need all the weapons we can get."
" Yes Cardinal Delacroix" said Mathew, too tired to fight anymore.
" I'm glad you see" said Michael, " farewell."
Mathew hung up, he didn't like trained wizard assassins but he was a little voice in an entire choir so he would have to deal with it.
