The Mader Brothers' Dairy Farm

We live and work on the Mader farm which is situated on the ridges of Harrison county in Eastern Ohio. In our family owned and operated business we milk about 100 cows out of a 160-cow herd. Our cows are averaging 24,223 pounds of milk per cow per year. 878 pounds of that is butter fat.

We farm about 800 acres. Annually, we raise 300 acres of corn, 150 acres of alfalfa, 50 acres of soybeans, 30 acres of wheat, 30 acres of oats, 50 acres of grass-hay and the balance of our land is in pasture and wood lots. The dairy herd uses about 60% of our crop production and the balance is sold for cash crops.

We also enjoy fishing on the farm ponds and hunting deer and turkey during season.

In 1998 we won the Ohio Conservation Farm Family Award for special measures to keep top soil in place (crop rotation with no-till plantation and minimum tillage, construction  of waterways and water diversions, spring development, ...).
