ROCK STAR VISITS POST OFFICE

THE SINGER from a multi-million selling rock band visited the Island to pursue his hobby of stamp collecting!
Dexter Holland, guitarist and vocalist with The Offspring, visited Dot Tilbury at the Post Office last Tuesday.

It may not be rock and roll but Dexter certainly likes it as he came armed with two stamp books full of Manx stamps.
Dot, who did not recognise the rocker, famous for songs such as Pretty Fly (for a White Guy), said: ‘I came back from lunch and asked him if he was being attended to and he said he was waiting for a lady called Dot.
‘He had come to see the bureau and I asked him where he was from and he said LA.’
Although the hit-maker, who only collects American and Isle of Man stamps, had never been to the Island before, he certainly knew about it as his stamp books featured art work of Viking ships and Manx cats.
‘I asked him if he had made any records and he said yeah and asked him what the name of the band was,’ Dot said.
Staff finally realised they could be in the presence of a star when the singer told them his band was due to play on the same bill as heavy metal legends AC/DC at Milton Keynes Bowl.
Staff looked up the band on the internet.
Dexter originally introduced himself as Bryan, his real name.
But he let slip his stage name when speaking to the post office’s production manager and fan Chris Oates on the phone.
A postman also recognised him and was delighted to meet him.
His group’s popularity was proven when both Radio 1 and Radio TT played his records while he was at the Post Office.
He added to his stamp collection by getting some Joey Dunlop stamps.
Dexter stayed in the Regency Hotel, Douglas, during his brief stay he flew out of the Island on Wednesday morning but he was on the phone to Dot in the afternoon, ringing from the band’s tour bus in the UK.
And did Dexter live up to his rock star image?
‘He was very modest and well-mannered,’ said Dot.
