| John Maddox was named after himself or possibly his mother's father. Friends and family called him Johnny. The 1810 Census of Fleming Co., KY, lists John Maddox over age 45 with a female over 45 and eight children. The family Bible says "Johnny Maddox departed this life April 20, 1818." This could not have been the father, John, as we know by court records that he died in Lewis Co., KY, late 1824. Other dates in the family Bible are slightly off when compared with things like censuses and death certificates. For instance, son William is listed twice, once having been born Jan. 20, 1805 and the other Jan. 8, 1805. I say all this because of the 1820 census of Fleming Co., KY. That census lists a young John Maddox (age 26-44) apparently heading a family of teenagers. It was about this time that John Sr. moved across the county line to Lewis Co. In that case, he may have left his oldest son in chart of the others: |

| John's household is on page 30 of this census. Benjamin Maddox, having just married, is nearby on page 31 ~ just him age 19-25 (he was 19) and new wife Nancy age 16-18. Interestingly, brother George was not found in any census. Did he head up north into Indian Territory? Did he join an army or navy? Did he die young? Or was George also called John? The family Bible lists George's birth year and John's death year. |
