Benjamin Maddox 1693 ~ 1770
I have found only two George Maddoxes in Maryland born 1730-1750 and died Fauquier Co., VA ~ my proven ancestor. Notley's son, Geworge, is one of them. the other is the son of Benjamin, Notley's uncle. The probable age of Notley's George makes me lean toward him. But the names in Benjamin's family are oft repeated in my line, though they are common names. Both Notley and Benjamin descend from Cornelius.
Benjamin was born 1693 in Charles Co., MD. About 1717 at age 24, he married Frances Posey. Some believe Benjamin's son, George, might have been the one who drew pay from Charles County in 1781 for service in the Revolutionary War. But Ben's son would have been around 50, a rather old age atthat time. It is more likely that Benjamin's nephew's (Notley's) son, George, what the one receiving this pay. Benjamin and Frances had 14 children: Thomas, Mary, Elizabeth, Ignatius, Phebe, Benjamin, Cornelius, George, Richard, Leonard, Lydia, Walter, Anne, and Mary Anne. Although the official religion of Maryland was primarily Anglican, there were many Catholics there also. I believ that Benjamin converted to the Catholic religion, perhaps for his wife, because he named one of his sons Ignatius (a common name among Catholics). On August 23, 1770, Benjamin's will was recorded in Charles Co., MD, Vol/Liber 6, Folio/Pg. 79. It was probated September 19. His wife and children were all listed. Son Thomas and wife Frances were administrators. Son George was to receive "negro Will upon the death of his mother." Son Benjamin was to receive "Hornfair" and "Posey's Chance" and a gray mare. Son Thomas was to received "Hornfair's Addition." Son Cornelius was to be raised by brother Thomas. All the other children got "one English shilling and no more" with the remainder of the estate being divided equally among them. Son Walter died there in Charles County, MD, in 1773, so is not the one who later appeared in Fleming Co., KY.
