Snow Lodge
Chapter 30
Two hours later found Brian in a hospital bed of his own, a drip in his arm. Now that AJ was safe, Brian had quickly realised just how exhausted he was, and so had the Doctors. They had checked him out, and found that he had a mild case of hypothermia, and was physically and mentally exhausted from his ordeal, and so they had admitted him to the hospital as well, despite Brian's claim that he was fine. The Doctors also believed that Brian was suffering from shock, and they wanted to keep an eye on him.
However, despite the order to rest, Brian found that he was unable to do anything of the sort, especially since they had so far refused to tell him anything about AJ. Everytime he closed his eyes he could see him, laying there deathly still, the rattling breathing echoing in his ears.
Finally the young doctor Brian had grabbed initially walked into the room.
"Hey there, how are we doing then?" He asked cheerfully.
Brian turned and pinned him with soulful eyes full of pain.
"How's Alex?" He asked immediately.
"He's being taken care of."
"Is he going to be okay?"
"I'm not the doctor in charge of his case, so I'm afraid I can't tell you. But I promise you he is in the best possible hands. Now, it seems I have however, been put in charge of you, so I think that I'd better introduce myself, seeing as I didn't have a chance earlier. I'm Doctor Jones, but you can call me Jonesy."
As he introduced himself he put out his hand for Brian to shake. Brian looked at him, not happy that he still didn't know about AJ, but at least a little relieved that this doctor was going to be around. He had decided earlier that he liked him.
"I'm Brian Littrell." He replied, shaking his hand.
"I know. It's on your chart. Not to mention most of the nurses in here are fighting over being the one to take care of you."
"Not all of them?"
"Yeah well, the other's are men." Jonesy grinned.
Brian had to smile back at him, he was a smart alec, just like AJ. Thinking of him made the smile fall from Brian's face. Jonesy saw this and was immediately concerned, he could see that Brian was in an emotionally fragile state, and he needed some support.
Unfortunately, the one thing that could bring Brian out of it was news that his friend was going to be okay. However that news wouldn't be coming anytime soon. He actually did know AJ's condition, and the prognosis wasn't good. But he knew that Brian wasn't going to take that very well, so it had been decided not to tell him for the time being, at least until he was over the worst of his own problems.
He sat down on the side of Brian's bed, and rested a comforting hand on Brian's forearm. "Is there anyone I can contact for you? Friend's, family?"
Brian looked up at him, his eyes once again brimming with tears. "Oh God, I need to get hold of the guys, they need to be here. Kevin is going to flip when he finds out." Brian bit his lip as he imagined what his cousin's reaction would be.
"I can call them for you if you want, explain what's going on."
"Could you, I really don't want to have to face them just yet."
"Sure. Just give me the numbers. You really need to rest anyway." Jonesy replied.
"I can't sleep, every time I close my eyes I see AJ lying there."
Jonesy nodded, not surprised, he handed Brian a piece of paper and a pen, before leaving the room. "I'll be back in a sec okay, you just write down those numbers for me."
Brian jotted down the numbers for Kevin, Howie and Nick. He was going to add Denise's number as well, until he remembered that Denise was supposed to be on holiday in Europe for a few weeks. He sighed, Kevin would know how to contact her. Jonesy chose that moment to re-enter, a nurse at his heels.
"Brian, this is Shelly, she's the nurse on shift at the moment. If you need anything, just press the buzzer and she'll come a running okay?"
Brian nodded and handed Jonesy the list.
"Thanks, now I just need to do one more thing, and then I'll go start on these phone calls." With that Shelly handed Jonesy a syringe, and he injected something into Brian's IV bag. Almost immediately Brian felt drowsy, and he yawned. Jonesy smiled "That should do the trick." He said. Brian was about to ask what he meant, but before he could he fell into a deep sleep.
Jonesy checked his vitals for a moment, before turning back to Shelly.
"I want him checked every hour, lets keep him under for at least the next few hours, he needs the rest."
Shelly nodded "Sure thing."
Jonesy sighed before speaking. "I want you to take care of him personally. I know how much attention these two are going to bring, and so we are going to restrict access to both of them and put extra security on, the less people involved the better, easier to keep track of who is allowed in and who isn't."
Jonesy rubbed his neck tiredly as they left the room. Shelly asked the question she had wanted to know as she closed the door behind them.
"Is the other one going to be okay?"
Jonesy stopped and turned around to look at her before shaking his head sadly. "I don't know Shel, I just don't know."
