Snow Lodge
Chapter 28
Once inside, he grabbed as many blankets as he could find, along with the First Aid Kit, and a couple of pillows, he took them outside, and put them in the back of the car.
He was then ready for AJ. He rushed back into the house, and moved over to where AJ lay. He knelt down beside him and brushed some hair off of his sweaty forehead.
"Baby, it's time to go. I need to move you now, but I don't want to hurt you. I'm gonna take you outside, and I promise to be as gentle as I can okay?"
AJ didn't answer him, nor did he move as Brian put his hands under AJ so he could lift him. Brian closed his eyes and grunted as he used the last dregs of his energy to lift AJ and carry him to the waiting truck.
Somehow he managed to slide AJ across the back seat, and settle him so that he was surrounded by as much padding as he could. The road down the mountains was twisty and bumpy, and Brian didn't want to risk AJ sliding off the seat, or aggravating his injuries any more.
Once he was satisfied that AJ was secure, Brian shut the door and ran back to make sure that the cabin was secure and locked up.
Finally they were ready to go.
Brian put the truck into gear, and pressed gently down on the accelerator, praying that everything would be all right as the car began to inch forward. It was difficult to start with, as the snow on the ground was fairly deep, and Brian was extra glad that he had tires that were meant for travelling in bad weather.
As the car built up a momentum, it became easier to move, and Brian steered the truck down the track towards the main mountain road.
About 5 minutes later, he finally reached the end of the track, and turned his truck down the mountain. The road was a little clearer, as the wind had blown most of the snow off of the road, and so Brian was able to move a little faster.
He wasn't sure how fast he could risk driving at. On the one hand, he knew that AJ needed to get to the hospital as quickly as possible, that every moment was vital, yet on the other hand, Brian knew that the road was icy and dangerous, and if he went too fast, there was a risk of him losing control of the vehicle. If he did that, then there was a good chance that neither of them would make it to the hospital alive.
He glanced out of the side window at the side of the road, and the 200-foot drop that was only a few feet from the side of his truck. No, he needed to be as careful as he could, cos even if the crash didn't kill them, there was not likely to be anybody else up here for days. He glanced in the rear-view mirror, where he could barely see AJ under the mass of blankets. He wasn't going to risk that.
