St. Lucian Indians “Reclaiming Our Heritage” |
|
In 1859, the first shipload of East Indian Immigrants set foot on Castries Harbour by way of the Palmyra. Twelve ships would later contribute to the exodus of Indians to St. Lucia. 90 % of these Jahajis hail from the Uttar Pradesh and Bihar regions of India while 10% from the Madras, Calcutta area. After the Indentureship scheme was outlawed 3,000 East Indian Jahajis remained claiming St. Lucia as their home. Today, in the 21st century, at least 10 percent of the population are the descendants of these East Indian Indentured Servants (Jahajis). Though the road for Indians have been filled with obstacles, their high visibility in the ethnic makeup along with their influence in all sectors of society presents an undeniable presence in St. Lucia. We are now at a transition in history where the old era is being phased out and the new era is being ushered in. If heritage from the old is not maintained with the newly acquired tools of the new era then we will all be at an inpass. Herein, lies the need for the formation of this website.
