Mad at Him began as a "joke band" more or less, but quickly turned into a little more serious unit while still maintaining its humorous nature. Steve and Daniel knew each other long before either maintained the idea of being in a band together. Steve was (and is) an avid bicycle rider, as well as a respected rock climber. Meanwhile, Daniel spent his time working on his art and playing the guitar. In between, he skateboarded around like a hooligan. Daniel got his start in a band, when he, along with his brother, and some friends started Mosh Pit Spit. They wrote a few songs, but didn't get too far when things started to go awry. Daniel's brother Thomas, brought in another guitar player code-named Harry. Harry, Thomas, and the drummer all left Mosh Pit Spit and formed the band "Keydom." This left Mosh Pit Spit in a crisis they could not escape. The band shortly disbanded and left Daniel on his own yet again. On occasion, Daniel would sit in with Keydom or even just play with Thomas or Harry, but nothing ever came of it. So Daniel went on his own and formed The Ancient Waterpistols. An immortal entity that relied on no one but Daniel. Occasionally someone would join, or leave but the Waterpistols never changed. After a time, Thomas and Daniel decided to create some songs together. They added Harry to their ranks and called themselves Alone In My Sleep, a collaberation between Keydom and The Ancient Waterpistols. They set to work on an E.P. writing several songs. They finished two E.P.'s before deciding to call it quits for the time being. So naturally Daniel returned to The Ancient Waterpistols. (Confused?)It was then that Daniel finally finished the album Shatter. A collection of hard hitting songs that mixed hard rocking rhythms with a punk flavor. Thomas, Daniel, and Steve all knew each other and began hanging out around this time. Never even really considering being in a band together. Soon, Thomas left for college. Daniel and Steve began hanging out more regularly. One day while Daniel was playing guitar, Steve decided to try and play bass. At first, Steve began to learn several Ancient Waterpistols songs. But soon, the two decided to form their own band. They began putting silly words to songs and soon had an arsenal of joke-like songs. Such as "King of the Cosmos" or "5 After 5:25." They found that with Daniel writing simple smooth guitar parts Steve could sing nice sounding songs with a funny undertone. People really seemed to enjoy the songs, but couldn't seem to get past the seemingly random lyrics and jokes in the songs. With a little time, the songs began to mature. Both became tired of only singing about "stupid things that made no sense." They began to take their writing a little more seriously. They soon had more complex songs that made a bit more since. With songs like, "M.I.A. (She Kissed Me)" or "Talking to Richie" they began to show that they could be a little bit more serious. It will be interesting to see where the band goes next. It will be very interesting, since Steve and Daniel have extremely different tastes in music and in the way the songs should be and sound. So far it has worked out alright, only time will tell how Mad at Him will end up. |
