SARS
[Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome]
have chosen to write this article about a scientific issue (i.e.
a disease called SARS) because it has received a lot of attention in the last
few months. In what follows, I am going to present a scientific account of the
disease. It's causes the efforts made to stop and avoid it and I'll try pr o vide some advice the end
SARS a new plague or the
AIDS of 21st. century??? It is the 1st. Epidemic. disease of this century. Strange enough,
this disease is like most diseases of Respiratory system and it is a flue-like
illness. At the beginning people and doctors were not serious in dealing with
these cases. surprising enough, the doctor who diagnosed this disease was one
of the 1st. who died from this disease.
The cases started to appear in Vietnam, then spread to Asia, Hong Kong ,
China, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand then to London, Canada and the USA. This
disease has no relation with how poor or rich the country is. At the moment the
number of cases infected can't be precisely counted, but they more than 5'000
cases. The death rate is between 3-5% except for the USA and Britain were no
deaths recorded, and most of deaths occurred between people who serve in the
medical field.
If we look
closely at the spread of this disease in a country like China where they closed
all their schools, most of the theaters, public restaurants and cinemas which
have been emptied from people we can guess the great damages which affected
such countries. In addition to this, if we look at the way ( new habits) of
loving in Canada, it's noticed that an increase in buying D.V.D disks to avoid
visiting public places such as cinemas and theaters .... etc. In addition to
this an increase in food delivery
service was noticed there.
Therefor
modern habits have been adopted in nine countries. One them is Canada.
After
several studies they suspected that the cause is a virus similar to that of
Corona virus, and that people would catch this disaster by droplet
communication with infected people.
No
reports have been reached from W.H.O to prevent people from going to epidemic
areas. but my own personal advice is that if there's no crucial need to go to
these areas we should try to avoid the trip as much as possible.
Although,
SARS in future maybe similar to Corona virus, yet a distinction should be made clear between them. Corona
symptoms appear to be similar to SARS symptoms but are treated easily.
Finally,
I have to clarify that Jordan is free from SARS and no single case was reported
for that disease . So people should not be afraid at all . In addition. I am sure if we follow the procedures
recommended by the W.H.O. we'll be safe. Furthermore every country has it's own
protective measures that should be utilized efficiently Fortunately, many
experts in different countries are
working at the present time to find vaccines capable of defeating this disease.
