| First KLR Adventure | ||||||||||||||||
| I left home in the afternoon intent on riding 150 miles and reaching my campsite at 10,000ft. The traffic was light and I stopped three times to layer on more clothes as the temperature dropped and I gained elevation. Finally at 8500 ft. I had on all my clothes and with the sun fading into the west my teeth were chattering but I pressed on. Soon I was turning off the paved road onto the 2 mile gravel road toward camp. After setting up camp I fired up the unloaded KLR for the 14 mile ride to the nearest diner. I rode down and back up the cliff road with all high beam all the time and kept a keen eye for rocks that could send me to an off road death plunge. Needless to say my first night was bone cold and I set off for a long hike at first light. I arrived back at camp about 3 pm. and packed up for the 40 mile ride to the natural hot spring. I topped off the fuel tank at about 200 miles on the odometer and arrived at the dirt road leading to the springs well before sunset. After the previous cold night I slipped into the tub with the intent of staying put until the sun gave way to the moonless starlight. Several people came and went with good conversation and good refresments while I soaked away the evening. Finally I lumbered out, fired up my KLR and headed into town 5 miles back up the road for some food. I came back later that evening layed out my bag and went for another quick soak. I then crawled in the sack and fell asleep watching the stars and listening to the coyotes sing. I slept facing the east and when I saw the dawn breaking I launched out of my bag and ran to the tub, slipped in and watched the sun rise on the peaks. After a compete warming I packed up the KLR and headed for breakfast, the high mountain pass and the fun road home. My KLR averaged over 50mpg the entire trip and functioned flawlessly. This bike was and is a joy to ride on the paved roads and jumping off onto rutted dirt access roads was never a concern. Getting there truly was half the fun. --Jim |
