Q: Mika, another win this season, and your second win here in front of so many of your fans, and again with another great start. Talk us through it...
Mika Hakkinen: Well, I think I said in Hockenheim, you make a start like I did probably once a year, but it's not true, you do it once or twice a year. I had a fantastic start again and was able to overtake Michael and David for the first corner. Even then it was very close, I was close to Michael for the first corner but then that's what the racing should be. We came around that corner in one piece, so that also explains that sometimes when you do have something like that near the first corner, you need good drivers and this was the case, and all drivers did the right thing.
Q: I think it's fair to say that throughout the weekend you have actually been struggling for a race set-up, you said as much in the press conference yesterday. Now what happened? This morning you were a second behind Michael and this afternoon when you were a second quicker? Michael Schumacher: You expect an answer? (both Michael and Mika laugh)
MH: It was a combination of fantastic teamwork with the engine people and chassis people and together with the engineers we made some modifications to the chassis which we thought was the right thing to do, and like we saw in the race it was a fantastic thing to happen. It was very enjoyable the race, and, unfortunately, obviously I'm not going to tell you exactly what we did, but the car was very fast.
Q: Thank you Mika. Michael, after your recent run of very bad luck are you very disappointed not to have won, or just very relieved to have got those six points?
Michael Schumacher: No, honestly I have to say that today we were not fast enough to win the race. Not only I lost the start against Mika, which was a tight battle, when you see his pace, I mean, if he wouldn't have overtaken me at the start, then he probably would've done it later, through pit stops, because he was simply the fastest man today on the circuit. That's why I'm not too unhappy to keep second position, because even that was a tight battle with David, but we managed to plan our pit stops at the right moment, and had the right gap at the right moment so that we could drive home today in second position . Q: Now, yesterday you were faster than both McLarens. Do you feel that they've got faster, or perhaps in race trim the Ferrari just isn't the match of the McLarens at the moment?
MS: No, honestly I believe that what Mika said, he sorted out his car. It didn't seem to be fast enough yesterday, if you look at the gap to the other cars at the back, it was very close to them, which isn't normal. My gap to the other cars was sort of normal, and that was the simple reason. We stayed where we were Friday, we made good stops from Friday to Saturday, but then we didn't seem to pull out enough for the Sunday race. So, it's still some areas we have to work on, we have some good ideas on how to improve our situation, but then that's a natural situation for both of us, I believe. Let's see who keeps it up to the end. Q: Thank you Michael. David, you spent virtually the entire race just staring at Michael's rear diffuser. Do you think it's a good design?
David Coulthard: (laughs) That's certainly one of the most interesting questions I've had this year. Yeah, it's lovely, looks like it works well. I just wasn't quick enough in my first stint. For some bizarre reason, I had a very unusual balance, and obviously I need to find out if that first set of tyres had a problem with pressure. But certainly the second and third sets were much more like I expected. That first stint I was just falling away at quite a rate of knots, but thereafter I think I was quite competitive. I finished third, not to make excuses, but I did lose a lot of time behind the four Minardis there seemed to be out there. Michael caught the traffic well in that he always caught them in and around turn five, and then I never really got a chance to overtake them until we came out of turn ten, so there was always a second loss in that time, and if you look at the gap when I came out after that last stop it was probably only .3 of a second the difference between Michael getting the corner and me not. That sometimes makes a difference. I finished third, and that's all I deserve really. Q: Mika, for the first time this year the championship has changed, it's gone from Michael to yourself. We're moving on to Spa, do you now think that you're the favourite for the championship? MH: Um... MS: Say yes. MH: You know, all the way through the season, a lot of people say different things, they think who's going to win it, who's going to lose it, and who has lost the motivation, who has the motivation? You know, all kind of discussion goes on all the way through the season. I keep to my own head all the time, concentrate on my work, and the point of the race is to try to win. And that's what I'm going to do for the rest of the season. I'm not going to really think about who's going to win and who's going to lose, because that will be decided at the end of the year when we count the points together. |
