Chapter Two Part Two: Here's Ranko!
Disclaimer: I don’t own these characters, don’t sue me…

++++++++++

Ranko frowned cutely. "Why do I have to wear a kimono anyway? We're just visiting your friend's house. It's not like I'm going on a date or anything. No biggy, ne?"

Genma sweated slightly. Is she psychic or something? When he calmed down he started again. "It's not a big problem, but Mr. Tendo and our family are good friends. Besides, you know how traditional your mom wants you to be. Since we're visiting the Tendos, it would be best for you to act the way your mom would want you to. I'm sure it will make her proud."

Inside his head he was chanting four words over and over again like a mantra. Pleasefallforitpleasefallforitpleasefallfor it...

"Oh, all right," Ranko said, her shoulders slumping. "I'll wear the kimono if you want. But remember this is only for Okaasan. Don't try doing this again, you know that I rather wear comfortable clothes that won't hinder me when I fight." With that said, she went into the tent they had set up.

Genma gave a sigh of relief. Luckily, Ranko didn't know about the engagement or she'd probably start dressing like a boy or something just to make sure she wouldn't have to marry the boy.

Then he felt wetness on his nose. He looked up at the dark clouds settling over Japan. "Aw, man."

++++++++++

"Grrr.... Hyaa!!!!!"

A young boy and middle age man exchanged blows. The young boy had short, dark blue hair and was wearing a white gi. The man wore a brown gi. He backed away for a few moments catching his breath. His shoulder length brown hair and mustache covered with sweat.

Then the two charged at each other again. The man smiled. "You're" dodge "getting pretty" duck "good-" and fell over as his son landed a punch.

The boy stepped back and smirked. "Yup, I'm good aren't I father?" He walked over to his father and squatted while taking a towel to wipe his face. "I think you should rest father. I'm going to practice some more."

Soun Tendo smiled and went outside the dojo. Before going inside he glanced back at his only son who was currently breaking bricks. He walked over to the table in the middle of the living room and sat down. There was a stack of mail on the table brought in by Kasumi.

He accepted the tea from his eldest daughter and browsed through the mail. Hmm.. bill, bill, bill, letter from Saotome, bill, bill...wait a sec. Letter from SAOTOME!?! He quickly dropped all the bills on the table and looked closely at the postcard.

BRINGING RANKO FROM CHINA.

GENMA SAOTOME

He fought the urge to cry. No he wouldn't cry, again. Not after Kimiko left. I'll be strong for my family. To make sure he reread the postcard. Yes, Ranko is finally coming. He stood up and yelled.

"KASUMI, NABIKI, KANEDA!!! Come here, we have a discussion to make."

++++++++++++

"WHAT!" Kaneda yelled in disbelief. "I HAVE A FIANCEE!"

Kasumi and Nabiki were a bit shocked at the news, but then they relaxed. They should have expected something like this. Soun might have been their father, but they had to admit that he was not the brightest star in the sky when it came to making decisions. But, maybe, just this once, he might have come up with something.

Nabiki stared at her father while Kasumi breathed out, "Oh, my."

Soun smiled, oblivious to the glare his son gave him. "Yes, your fiancee's name is Ranko Saotome. It is your duty as the heir of the Tendo school of Anything Goes to unite the two schools."

"Oh my," Kasumi commented. "Do you think it is wise to arrange a marriage like that without asking Kaneda?"

"Well, sis. Kaneda doesn't have to marry her right away." Nabiki said, as a matter of factly. She turned to Kaneda and smirked. "Besides, you need to get a girlfriend ototo. Why don't you get to know your fiancee first before making assumptions? Anyway, daddy, what do you know about my sister-in-law?"

Kaneda fumed. "I'm not marrying someone I don't even know!"

Nabiki looked at her brother and shrugged nonchalantly. "Whatever, ototo."
"Hmm..." Soun thought about it for a moment, raking his brain for information on what Nodoka had told him years ago. "Well, Ranko is a polite girl, I remember Nodoka mentioning. She and her father have been on a training trip around Japan and China. Nodoka's a traditional lady and I suppose Ranko will be a traditional martial artist."

Kaneda groaned. A traditional girl, he thought grimly, just what I need. Another one of those fluffy dress girls. Why can't I get a girl with some excitement in her? "Give me a break, pop. A martial artist can't be very traditional and a traditional girl probably be afraid to even do stuff like running or something."

Nabiki sighed. Her little brother wanted a unique girl that wasn't tied in by traditional ways and not too aggressive. By the information her father had provided, Ranko was a perfect housewife. Not exactly her brother's tastes.

Right then, they heard a knock at the door. "Great." Nabiki said standing up. "They're here. I want to see my sister-in-law man."

Nabiki straightened out her kimono and walked to the front gate with Kasumi. Mr. Tendo also followed his two daughter's wanting to greet his daughter-in-law as soon as possible.

Kaneda sighed, uninterested. Just as his family had walked to the front gate, they ran back frightened. He stood to see what had them so spooked.

There stood a huge panda. "A panda?" No matter, he thought to himself, protecting his family was first priority.

The panda suddenly pulled out a sign out of nowhere. 'Hello, there.'

He stood there dumbstruck and was about to attack again when a voice singsonged from the hallway. "Otousan, wait up! I know you want hot water, but it's impolite to just walk into someone's house like this."

He turned to see a cute redhead wearing a white kimono shaking out the water out of the umbrella she held. She was slim with a build to kill for. Her unruly auburn hair was styled in a long braid that went all the way past her waist.

Everyone's attention was on the redhead who obviously owned this panda. Why she called it her father is a mystery to them. The girl walked up to the panda and stood in front of it. 'What took you so long?' the panda wrote on a sign.

The girl's eyelid twitched. "What took me so long? Well, OYAGI. It was raining outside and you just happened to make me carry our luggage that is very heavy. Another thing is that you made me wear this kimono and I am not going to get it ripped up because Oba-chan made it for me." She punched the panda and turned around. It was obvious that she just acknowledged our presence now because she blushed. "I'm sorry for intruding. I'm Ranko Saotome."

Soun ran over to Ranko and hugged her. Too bad all he got was air because Ranko had dodged the hug and stood by the huge panda. "..." After a while of staring he spoke again. "Finally, you're here!" Tears ran down his face, as he couldn't hold them in anymore.

Ranko turned to the boy that stood next to her cursed father. He was quite handsome with his dark blue hair and angular face. By the looks of it, he was a pretty decent martial artist. "Is your father always this emotional?"

Kaneda sighed. "No, not always. He has gotten better and hardly does so but when something big happens he gets emotional. Old habits die hard." While Kaneda and Ranko were talking, the panda went into the kitchen to get hot water.

Kasumi smiled brightly at Ranko. "Hello, I'm Kasumi Tendo. I'm sorry for not being a good hostess."

Ranko couldn't help but smile back at the smiling brunette. She was so cheerful and there was an aura of peace surrounding her. "No, it's our fault really. I know that if it weren't for this unusual circumstances you would have been a perfect hostess."

Nabiki got a sly look on her face as she analyzed Ranko. Pretty, well-built, and great manners. The perfect wife, I suppose. "Hey, I'm Nabiki Tendo." Ranko smiled back at her cheerfully. She turned to her little brother and smirked. "Hey, bro. Why don't you show Ranko around or something."

"Yes," Kasumi said, agreeing whole-heartedly. "She is our guest and it would only be proper for her to know the place."

Kaneda sighed, as he knew there was no way out. "Fine." He looked at Ranko and couldn't help but notice her sweet smile. "I'm Kaneda Tendo. Would you like to see our dojo?"

Nabiki resisted the urge to smack her head. How typical of Kaneda, she thought sarcastically. Everything just has to be martial arts and the dojo.

Ranko smiled happily. "Sure. I've never spent that much time in a dojo before and it has been a while." Kaneda walked out the porch toward the dojo with Ranko in tow leaving Nabiki blinking in shock.

++++++++++

Ranko looked around the large dojo. In the corner were a bunch of cement bricks and other equipment. "Nice dojo." She commented sincerely.

Kaneda smiled slightly. "Thanks." He wondered if this girl was what his father had told him. Maybe she knows a bit of martial arts, he thought inwardly. Wishful thinking, he berated himself. No girl was interested in martial arts and definitely not this frail looking one. He sighed softly. Too bad she isn't into martial arts. Then this engagement wouldn't have been so bad. At least then he would have at least something to say that would interest her.

Ranko turned to him as if hearing his thoughts. "Hey, Kaneda-kun."

Kaneda blushed slightly when he heard her call him 'Kaneda-kun.'

"I was wondering," she started."-if you would spar with me. All I've ever sparred with for the last month or so is my father so I want to test my skill against you. What do you think? Of course I'd need to borrow a gi since I can't move very well in these clothes."

Kaneda stumbled, surprise. "You really know how to do martial arts?" Ranko nodded. He smiled. Maybe, he thought, maybe, just once, there will be a girl for me. He couldn't tell if she was the one shot type or the type that was actually dedicated to martial arts. Might as well test it out. "Okay. You can borrow Nabiki's since she hasn't been practicing much lately."

After Ranko went and changed into Nabiki's gi, they both went to their respective positions on opposite sides of the dojo. Kaneda went into ready stance while Ranko just stood there relaxed. "I'll go easy on you so don't worry." Kaneda said assuringly to Ranko.

Ranko just smiled back. But inwardly she frowned. Does he think I am, chopped liver?

Kaneda made the first move and decided to attack first. At first he pulled his punches, afraid that he was going to hurt Ranko, but when none of his punches connected he added a bit more force. Ranko was like the wind, weaving in and out of his attacks like it was nothing.

After a while of analyzing Kaneda, Ranko found out that he was indeed holding back like she had first assumed. He's pretty good and dedicated to the art. Since she finished analyzing his techniques she decided it was time to go on the offense. She ducked under a kick and sent one of her own. It didn't connect.

Good, she thought inwardly. Now I can do more difficult techniques. She dodged several more of his punches and did a spinning kick. This time it connected and didn't do much damage since she had put little force in it. She pressed her offense and started punching with a faster pace.

Whoa, he thought. This girl is no slack. Almost got me there with all those fast punches. And that spinning kick of hers looks like a cross with gymnastics and figure skating. Anything goes indeed. "Hey" duck "you're" jump "pretty good." By now he was a bit winded but Ranko didn't even break a sweat.

"You're not bad yourself." I should end this already, she thought. Ranko ran to attack Kaneda and delivered a punch in the abdomen careful not to add too much force. Kaneda got the breath knocked out of him from the last punch she pulled. Only his tough training kept him from falling to his knees. She walked over to Kaneda worried. "Hey, Kaneda-kun. You okay?"

He nodded. Man, that was one killer punch. This girl is definitely no slouch. He grimaced inwardly though. I can't believe I lost to her. "That was a good match Ranko. Next time I won't go easy on you again."

"Uh huh." Ranko frowned. Easy on me, she thought, more like I was easy on HIM! Right then Kasumi came in with refreshments. Ranko gratefully accepted the juice Kasumi offered.

"Ranko." Kasumi said. When Ranko's attention was to her she spoke again. "Father said that you are going to stay here for a while so I'm going to show you your room."

"Okay," Ranko said following Kasumi upstairs. She walked into the small but okay room and settled her pack down. Kasumi offered her a towel.

"You just sparred right?" Kasumi asked. Ranko nodded. "Then you should go take a bath to get freshened up."

++++++++++

Nabiki walked by the dining room and turned around. She looked inside and saw her father sitting with some strange man. The stranger was wearing a white gi and handkerchief on his head. She then resumed her walk to the kitchen to get some snacks. While opening the refrigerator she decided to question Kasumi about the man. "Hey, Kasumi. Who is that stranger dad is talking to?"

Kasumi shook her head blank. "I really don't know but I do suppose he might be Ranko's father, Mr. Saotome."

Nabiki was about to say more when she was interrupted by a scream. "AARRRRGGHHH!!!" Then she heard loud bangings on the second floor. "You wouldn't say that what I just heard is..." Nabiki started.

+++++++++

The Tendos and the strange man, who they assume is Genma Saotome, rushed up the stairs to find an unconscious Kaneda embedded on the floor. A flushed Ranko stood clad in a towel outside the bath. She was breathing heavily and trying to calm herself.

Mr. Saotome shook his head while Soun stood there dumbstruck. Kasumi, being Kasumi, said "Oh, my." Nabiki smirked with a calculating gleam in her eye. She pulled out her camera ready to snap away when a hand grabbed it. She turned to glare at whoever that dared to take her camera away from her.

Mr. Saotome stood there with a stern look. He never wavered for a moment from the icy glare Nabiki gave him when he took out the roll of film from the camera. "Don't even think about doing anything like this to my family." Besides, he added silently. If Ranko found out about how I let Nabiki take pictures of her wearing THAT then she's going to kill me.

+++++++++

A fully dressed Ranko and Genma sat in front of all the Tendos. Ranko had calmed down a bit but was still a bit upset while Kaneda was rubbing the bruise on his head fuming. Nabiki on the other hand was glaring daggers at Genma who pointedly ignored her. Kasumi just smiled her trademark smile at the two guests.

"Ah hem." Soun cleared his throat, getting everyone's attention. He nearly blanched at the looks they gave him, well except Kasumi's since she was smiling at him. He swallowed the lump in his throat and spoke again. "Well children now that my friend Genma is here we can finally introduce ourselves formally." Soun was surprised at how calm he sounded. Oh well, he thought, I CAN be calm at times. "This man is my friend..."

"Genma Saotome." Genma introduced himself as he bowed slightly towards the Tendo family.

"and his daughter..."

"Ranko Saotome." The redhead said softly.

Kaneda had only just then noticed the man where the panda should have been and was confused. So he voiced his confusion. "Hey, dad. Where is that panda? And when did Mr. Saotome get here?"

"Ah, well..um.." Soun looked flustered for he didn't know how to explain it. His friend had not given him any details to what led him to changing into a panda.

Genma seeing that his friend was stuck decided to help since it was his fault for not explaining. "Well, it is kind of hard to explain this but... I'm the panda."

The Tendo children stared at Genma with skepticism. He's the panda?!

Ranko shook her head at how lame Genma's so-called explanation was. "Kasumi-chan? Can you please get me two cups of cold water and a kettle with hot water?" Kasumi nodded a bit miffed at the odd request but obliged anyway. When Kasumi came back with the things Ranko requested Ranko took one of the cups filled with cold water and prepared to dump it on her father. "The reason why he turns into a panda is because in China we came across this training ground full of springs called Jusenkyou. Jusenkyou means 'Cursed Springs' in Mandarin but we had not known it at that time. While sparring my father fell into one of the springs and got cursed." Sensing the disbelief from the Tendos she dumped the water on her father.

The Tendos stared in shock as Ranko's father changed into a huge panda.
"Oh, my."
"But...how? It's not possible to lose that much weight!"
"Ahhh!"
"So that's the story Saotome-kun..."

After they had voiced their reactions they had kept on staring at the panda not believing what they have seen. They stared and stared and stared and stared.... and stared...

Genma-panda frowned a flipped a sign. *Stop Staring it's not polite!* Instead of getting them to stop, they had continued to stare. *Wham* *WHAM! WHAM! WHAM!* The Tendos snapped out of their stupor when they each felt a wooden sign hit (and in Kasumi's place, tap) them on the head.

Ranko and Genma sighed simultaneously. Typical reaction towards the abnormal and seemingly impossible.

Kasumi looked at Ranko anxious. "Ranko-chan. Do you have a curse?" The rest of the Tendos turned to look at Ranko.

Nabiki berated herself silently. How could I forget such a thing?

Ranko shook her head. "Not anymore. We found a cure during our delayed stay in China."

Kaneda sighed in relief. "Then why isn't your father cured?" Kaneda asked confused.

Genma sighed. "Because I deserve it. I shouldn't have brought her to Jusenkyou in the first place."

Ranko nodded. "Yes, he needs to learn his lesson. I do have a jug of Nannichuan, though. So whenever I find it fit then he will be cured."

Finding the silence to be uncomfortable, Soun cleared his throat once again, absently rubbing the lump on his head. Before speaking again he flashed Genma a glare that caused the latter to raise an eyebrow in amusement. "Ahem. Now that you are here Ranko. The schools can finally be united! This is my son Kaneda and I'm sure that you two will be perfect for each other."

Kaneda had made a notion to protest but stopped when he looked at Ranko. Ranko was staring at his father shocked and then looked at her own father. "M-marriage?" She stammered. He had to fight the urge to back away when Ranko's shocked expression turned to one that he was very familiar with.

*Schools united, Schools united* Those two words repeated over and over in Ranko's mind as she stared in shock at the two men in front of her. When it had finally dawned on her she growled in anger at her father. "Meeting some friends huh?" Genma flinched and backed away slightly. Ranko tried to control her anger as she turned towards Mr. Tendo. "I'm sorry but I WILL not be forced into an arranged marriage."

"B-but, but," Soun said stammering. "It's a matter of honor that you two are married!" Ranko stiffened at the word of honor and turned to look at him in the eye.

"Honor?! I don't care, I am not going to be forced into an arranged marriage!"

"Yeah!" Kaneda yelled. "Who wants to marry that kawaiikune tomboy!"

Ranko glared at him. Just as Ranko was about to slam him into the table someone, err.. everyone beat it to her. Genma whapped him on the head with a wooden sign from out of no where, Soun conveniently hit him with a shogi board, Nabiki innocently dropped her balance books on him, and Kasumi had leaned forward and delicately whapped him slightly on the head.

She decided to slam him anyway for good measure. "And who wants to marry a peeping tom pervert?!" Glaring at her father she turned her heel. "I don't care what you say but I'm not going to marry him. I'm going home."

Looking for an excuse to keep Ranko from leaving he blurted out, "But you don't know where your mom lives!" He flinched at the angry but hurt look she gave him.

Ranko growled. "Who's fault is that?!"

Genma stuttered. "B-b-but..." An inspiration struck for the first time in many years. "If you'd just try this engagement then I'll take you back home. You don't have to marry him if you don't want to." He crossed his fingers and looked meaningfully at Soun.

Soun nodded understanding and added. "Yes, yes. Just try this engagement and then after this semester is over you can tell us if you want the engagement or not."

Ranko snarled frustrated. How in the world did this happen, she thought. It was suppose to be a 'visit' to his friend. I don't want to marry someone I don't love! "I don't care I'm leaving! I'll look up Okaasan's name in the phone book, I'm sure she's listed."

Desperate, Genma dashed up to Ranko and before she knew it, was knocked out cold. Soun sighed. So much for trying to convince her to accept the engagement.

The Tendo girls looked on with disbelief at the commotion before them. How could they do that to her? Nabiki kept her face neutral but she was inwardly frowning. That is no way to treat a girl, especially not his own daughter. Kasumi, however, wasn't so inconspicuous on how she felt about their actions. She gave the two grown men a slight frown and disapproving gaze that made them feel like they had just been caught with their hands in the cookie jar.

+++++++++

Ranko groaned as she opened her eyes. She felt a wet towel on her forehead and the memories of what just happened came back to her. She found herself in the guestroom of the Tendo house and saw that the oldest Tendo sister, Kasumi, was looking at her with a pleasant smile. It seemed to be tinged with worry. She sat up and cursed at the migraine she was having.

Kasumi smiled sympathetically and handed her a glass of water and Tylenol. "Here, it will help you feel better. Mr. Saotome wasn't too gentle with you back there. Will you be staying here?"

Ranko thanked Kasumi and nodded. "I guess I'll be staying here until the end of the semester." She sighed. "At least we're not sleeping on the road anymore." She popped the tablet into her mouth and swallowed easily with the aid of water.

Kasumi nodded and took the empty glass from Ranko. She stood up from where she kneeled and walked towards the door. Glancing backwards at Ranko, she couldn't help but smile. If this worked out, Kaneda-kun would have a great wife.

+++++++++

Genma sighed as he thought back to his previous actions. "Ranko is going to kill me," he mumbled dispaired. "Oyagi." Genma jumped slightly when he heard Ranko call him. Ranko stood at the bottom of the stairs glaring at him. She walked out into the yard, never taking her cold blue eyes off of her father. "We need to TALK." Genma gulped as he stepped outside.
