| May 6, 2002, Paul & I headed up to Ottawa for a CRTC hearing. Unfortunately, what we didn't know was that the only appearing items were licence renewals for Telelatino, CPAC, and for CHUM's conventional TV stations. We left after about an hour, touring around Ottawa's radio scene. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| One of our first stops, a brief one, was to CHUM's MarketMediaMall, on George Street in Byward Market. The MMM is home to talker CFRA (580), sports The Team 1200 (CFGO), AC Majic 100 (CJMJ 100.3), CHR Kool FM (CKKL 93.9), and independent TV station The New RO (CHRO Pembroke and CHRO-43 Ottawa). The cluster's promo team was pre-occupied with the Senators series, so a tour wasn't in order. Same at the Rogers cluster on Thurston Drive, around the corner from the old CHUM building on Walkley Road. 2001 Thurston Drive is home to Oldies 1310 (CIWW), country Y105 (CKBY 105.3), classic rocker CHEZ 106.1, and modern rocker XFM (CIOX 101.1 Smiths Falls). |

| Fortunately, a promo guy at rocker 106.9 The Bear (CKQB-FM) was available to quickly show us around their Merivale Road "den", next door to CTV O&O CJOH (Ch. 13). He also gave us an advance peek at the hot items up for bids at the station's annual charity auction for the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO). And now... the towers. |

| The southernmost AM array in the nation's capital, CFRA has four top-hatted towers west of the community of Manotick. CFRA transmits in stereo (or so says the CRTC/Industry Canada records), with 50 kW day and 10 kW night. The small tower on top of the transmitter building (in the photo on the right) is that of the Ottawa amateur radio club. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

About a kilometre or two northwest of CFRA's site, on Moodie Drive, we found the six towers of The Team 1200 (CFGO). CFGO has been in CHUM's hands for about two years now, since Rawlco Communications sold off several stations, including sister Majic 100, and Toronto's CISS (92.5). Prior to sports, CFGO was known as CJBZ, and "Energy 1200" with a CHR format. Just south of this site used to stand the towers of CJSB (540), The Bear's predecessor "54 Rock", as well as those of CBC stations CBO (920, now on 91.5 FM) and CBOF (1250, now on 90.7). The CBC stations moved to FM in 1992, and CJSB became CKQB-FM in 1994. |

| Finally, off Fallowfield Road in Nepean, we found the five towers of Oldies 1310 (CIWW). Not much to see there, besides the towers and the smallish transmitter shack. CIWW is one of Ottawa's oldest stations, beginning in the 1920's as CKCO, later becoming CKOY, and now CIWW. Stay tuned for more! Ben MacMurchy & Paul Herriot, May 2002 |
