CHUM Radio Kingston
By Ben MacMurchy, October 18, 2003 (revised December 15/03)
CHUM Radio (and Scotiabank), at the corner of Brock & Wellington in downtown Kingston.  Note the STL tower on the roof, and the BOB FM poster in the window above the Scotiabank awning.  CHUM occupies the three upper floors of this bank building, one of the oldest structures in Kingston, but as you'll see, the building has been very-well maintained.  I'll be meeting producer Charlie Groulx at the Brock Street entrance (left side of the photo).
Upstairs we go to the third floor, and we'll start in "Prod 2".  This is the secondary production room, used for voice tracking, and smaller-scale production.  When he's not operating remotes on FLY FM or Senators games on CKLC, Charlie does a lot of his production in here.  Both production rooms boast Soundcraft multitrack consoles and two computers.  As of late November, the DCS/Maestro automation computers have been replaced by brand new Scott Studios SS32 machines.  In this photo, DCS can be seen on the monitor to the right of the board.  The other screen is for Cool Edit, Sound Forge, ACID, and the DCS Voice Tracker.
Here's the main production room, normally occupied by production manager Nick Lalonde.  The announce booth is to the left, in between the two production rooms.  On the right, you can see a rack of CDs containing prod music & sound effects, and below them, two Denon CD cart players, designed for prod.  Again, Soundcraft console, DCS machine, and Nick's editing workstation.
Next door is the on-air control room of the legendary 1380 CKLC.  Both on-air rooms contain big McCurdy consoles, automation control (they were using Maestro when I visited), and multipurpose computers.  Maestro is on the screen above the board, and KLZ NewsRoom is running on the machine to the left of the board.  CKLC currently offers a mostly automated adult standards format, with emphasis on local news.
Down the hall we go to FM control, home of the more successful of the two stations here: 98.3 FLY FM (CFLY-FM), offering an adult contemporary format.  This control room and Prod 2 each contain a Rode NT1 condenser mic, while the rest of the studios have Electro-Voice RE-20's and Sennheiser MD421's.  Maestro is on the raised screen, and various programs are on the other machine, including NewsRoom, (at the time) some DCS utilities, Cool Edit, and BSI Stinger, the program used for running "Beat The Bank", a promotion done on several CHUM stations during fall ratings periods.
On the other side of the glass is the FM "booth", which backs onto the CHUM Radio Kingston newsroom... the door is to the left.  KLZ NewsRoom is on the computer in here, with a small control panel below the screen, to turn the mics on & off, and to adjust the levels of the headsets & studio monitors.

Once again, kudos to Charlie Groulx for having me down here.
