School Information
The Whitmer Human Resources Center (W.H.R.C.) Elementary School is located in the City of Pontiac. The Whitmer Human Resources Center is an innovative school unlike any other facility. We are an elementary school consisting of pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. Currently we have a total enrollment of approximately 1410 students in these grade levels. We serve a diverse population of students from across the district. At each grade level we offer several classrooms, staffed by a teacher of bilingual students. Our multicultural and ethnic roots are celebrated throughout the school year.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY/SCHOOL PROFILE
The Whitmer Human Resources Center, often called the W.H.R.C., is a wonderfully unique
public school. We are located near the center of Oakland County, just east of Pontiac's City
Hall and the Board of Education building. Our staff serves the diverse needs of students from
the entire Pontiac District.  In the W.H.R.C. family is a ten classroom preschool, a grouping of
special education center programs, and an elementary school housing kindergarten through fifth
grade. Students also come to our school to learn in our Bilingual program. The W.H.R.C. was
architectually designed as an open classroom school to support team teaching and hands-on,
active learning through partnerships between community and the school staff.
Some of our distinctive features are:
40% African-American,5% White,45% Hispanic,& 10% Hmong
38 % of the staff are certified bilingual teachers
3 of the 4 kindergarten classrooms are full day programs
There are 3 speech and language teachers, 2 occupational therapy teachers and 2 physical therapy teachers on staff to meet specialized needs of students
6 of the 7 first grade classrooms participate in a 2 teacher, 80 minute daily literacy program
2 reading recovery teachers work with first grade students
Students throughout the building annually participate in the international JASON program
42 volunteers work with first grade students each week
4 Parent Project R.E.L.A.T.E. Coordinators and 1 bilingual resource teacher
Different Ways of Knowing school reform model training for teachers and staff
English and technology classes for parents of bilingual children each week
The HOSTS program tutors & 3rd and 4th grade students in reading each week
Project Synergy Works provides an after-school Learning to Learn program for 65 students
3rd year winning District and State Historical Competition at the Elementary Level
