The years of evil
fade into black,
deep in my mind,
keeping me
from having to face it,
to suffer through them
all over again.
Yet, someday the bricks
will start to crumble
and the great wall
of protection will fall
and I will be left
with the horrors
that I know nothing about.
When this day arrives,
how will I be able
to deal with it?
Where will I
have to run to?
Will you be here
to comfort me
when there is
no end in sight
or will you run
for your own cover,
refusing to hold
up a weight
which is not
your own to carry?
Will you help me
to deal with
the implications
or will you wonder what
it all means for you?
Will you hold my hand
when I cry long
into the night
or will you instead
run for refuge
in your own
sweet dreams?
Will you keep me safe
in your compassionate arms
or will you refuse
me refuge in
your calm embrace?
Will you soothe my pain
with your loving words
or will you hold your
tongue and let the silence
surround me?
Will you still see me
as a loyal friend,
a caring partner,
a passionate lover,
or will you see me
as a broken doll
in need of fixing
or even beyond repair?
Will you still love me
when it becomes hard
for me to find a way
to even love myself?
Will you still want
to be with me
when I have no laughter
to share with you,
or will you hold your joy in,
saving it for someone else?
Will you still choose me
over everyone else
even when I'm no longer
the person you choose?
Will you understand
when I push you away
and give me the space I need
or will you push back,
demanding to be a part
of what you can not understand?
Will you still be here
when the fog has finally passed
and I'm ready to feel love again
or will you have gone away,
leaving me to pick up
the pieces all alone?
