I Just Want You
By Beverly Greene
This poem is dedicated to every actress who has ever starred in a production of
For Colored Girls Who Ever Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Wasn't Enough
because it was directly after seeing that play that this poem was written.

There is something inside of me.
It's screaming, "Let me out!"
Let me out.
And I want it out.
I want to let it out.
I want to get it out.
I want to free it.
from this hazy cloud
of reality
that prevents me
from seeing my dreams
come true.
And I want you.
I want you to be here.
I want you to hold me.
I want you to kiss me.
I want you to want me.
I want you to love me.
I want to feel the softness
of your chest
beneath the slicked
touch of my fingers.
I want to hear your moans
in the dark of my room.
I want to feel you inside
where only my heart
will allow you to go.
I want to arch my back
with pleasure from you.
I want to lie in the curves
of your arm and chest
where I know I belong.
I want to wipe away
sweat of pleasure.
I want you.
I want to steal
happiness from life.
I want to find more
friends who believe
in me and what I do.
And I want you.
I want to hear
you whisper, "I love you"
and scream my name,
alarming the neighbors
of our passions.
I just want you.
I want you to call.
I want to hear
your voice on the line
letting me know
that you care.
I want to be able
to smile at morning
and laugh at night.
I want fear
to be foreign
and love
to be local.
I want breath
to come easily
with no thoughts
of the many bruises
of my childish skin.
And I want you.
I want to feel your arms,
protecting me
from the evils
not even I know
hide in the back
of my darkened mind.
I want sleep
to be welcome
because I'm safe,
with you.
Only good dreams
would dare come
in your presence.
I just want you.
I want to be happy.
I want to be free.
i want to be in love.
I want to be with you.
I want to be me.
