By Beverly Greene
This poem is dedicated to the very first woman I ever realized I had a crush on. She never knew it, but she opened the gate for me to find my one true love, my wife, and my bestfriend, Jamie.

But,
I never knew
that I could
feel this way
about someone
like you,
like me.
I have needed
so many things
for far too long
and I've searched
endlessly,
fruitlessly,
everywhere.
I've been searching,
long and hard,
but I never
thought to look
where I found you.
Who knew?
Did anyone see it?
Could others
tell before I knew?
Did you?
Have I always
been this way
or did it just
pop up?
Is it just you
or are there others
I would lay away
at night
wishing for?
Maybe
I will be able
to find someone
who I enjoy
talking to
as I do you,
someone who
has eyes
as pretty
as yours,
someone who
stares into my eyes
and sends shivers
up and down
my spine
the way you do.
I could get lost
in your eyes,
but there are others
to be concerned with.
You're not free
for me to feel
this way about.
Your arms
aren't available
to hold me
like I dream of.
Your hands
aren't able
to caress me
and hold mine
like I wish for.
Your lips
aren't mine
to kiss sweetly
like I long for.
I can't have you,
but I need you.
