Jim Currigan goes with the Mean Machine like mullets at a Mercury game...  Entering the Summer 2001 campaign, Currigan was the team's career leader in basehits (189), singles (162), walks (26), and on-base percentage (.570).  He's a close-second in career average (.548).  Jimmy C. also led the team in fans (4).  Mean Machine On-Line caught up with the former slow-pitch superstar to talk about life after M.M. softball.

MM:  What have you been up to since you went on sabbatical?

JC:  I accepted a lucrative offer and moved to Japan.  It's been nice. I've really been able to take advantage of the Japanese softball fields --- they've got the short porch.  And I started collecting teddy bears for my little boy.

MM:  You're a large man here, Jimmy.  You must be REALLY BIG over there.

JC:  <silence>

MM:  Okay.  Moving on.  What was your favorite moment as a Mean Machine?

JC:  Ahhh.  Those were the good 'ol days.  Let's see, I haven't thought about this in years, so I might be sketchy on the details.

It was March 10, 1999.  The Winter '99 championship game; we were down 9 runs entering the bottom of the 7th.  We score 9 runs with 2 outs, and with me at 3rd at 2 outs, Rick Strouse hit a grounder to 3rd --- the guy pulled a Bill Buckner on the ball, and I got to be Craig Counsell.  We won the championship 14-13.

MM:  Wow.  Did any endorsement deals develop from that?

JC:  Not really.  One time I got offered a deal on filtered water.  Turns out bastards dialed the wrong number.  They wanted Jim Culligan.  Hey, can we send a copy of this to Wiffle?

MM:  And your favorite Mean Machiner of all-time?

JC:  "The Stoke."  Hey, this one time....

MM:  Whoa, whoa!  Looks like we're out of time!  We'd like to thank Sluggin' Jim Currigan for taking time out of his busy day to be here.  Jim Currigan, slugger, philanthropist, gargantuan by Japanese standards.
