John MacDougall left school at 16 after matriculation (1923) and went to work in a coal merchant's office doing the accounts . I think (because he hated maths !!) he took his Civil Engineering exams through night school courses. I don't know when he qualified, nor when he went to work in the Town Hall in Scarborough. He was in the Air Raid Precautions (ARP) during the Second World War and took his turn at fire watching duty on the Town Hall roof during air raids, and in our road when not on duty!

He moved to Liverpool Town Hall in 1947. In 1948 he moved to Preston Town Hall, working for the Lancashire County Council as a Land Surveyor, mostly surveying land for new schools throughout Lancashire.

As a young man he rowed and played Rugby Union on the wing. He would listen to rugby matches on the "wireless"! Despite moving to Lancashire, he remained a fanatical Yorkshire supporter of cricket.

He had a very nice light tenor voice, but hated performing. His party piece was "Come into the garden Maude".
