The Multicultural Association of Colchester County (MACC) meets every month September through
June of every year usually at Cox Institute, Nova Scotia Agricultural College (NSAC), Truro, Nova
Scotia. Our meetings consist of a half-hour business meetings to be followed by a speaker or other
program, and a social time with refreshments. Usually, at least half of the regular members at
meetings were born in this country, other members are recent or not-so-recent immigrants. Often
international students at the NSAC attend. This year the following countries were represented. India,
The Phillippines, Greece, Italy, Nepal, Ghana, Bolivia, Guyana, Germany,
Switzerland, Canada, Panama, Honduras, Guatemala, Ecuador, Chile, Bosnia, Swaziland, Egypt, Morocco, Ethiopia, United States, Iran, Lebanon, Saychelle Islands, Korea, Mexico, and Holland.
To make public aware about the uniqueness of a number of different cultures including the
language, geography, climate, food, clothing, shelter, music, and culture et-cetera
To reach the public and spread the word that racism and discrimination hurts everyone in our
community
To develop and /or influence existing multicultural policy to promote equality in the Colchester
county and area
To create a sense of belonging and respect for all cultures in our area
To educate population of the area on multiculturalism by
(a) delivery of multicultural programs; and
(b) acting as a clearing house for multicultural issues, information and consulting services
To advocate broad multicultural issues
To co-operate and work with other associations in the area like the Colchester YMCA, Cobequid
Arts Council; Together we're better.
Participating in International nights held at NSAC, the Citizenship courts, and Canada day
Celebrations
Organizing semi-finals for the Public Speaking Contests for Grade 10 through 12 students
from Colchester, East Hants, Cumberland and Pictou Counties
Slide presentations, workshops and talks on various countries and topics related to
multiculturism
Members of our Council speak of their respective cultures, to the Boys' and Girls' clubs,
School groups, teachers associations , Kiwanis organizations and other bodies.
Exhibition of dolls in national dress as well as other materials related to multiculturalism
The first large project carried out by MACC in 1976 was a feasibility study to assess the
establishment of a multicultural centre in Truro and /or other area of Colchester County
Attending provincial and national meetings related to multiculturalism like Coalition of
Immigrant women, Symposia on Citizenship, Race Relations Workshops,
Locally we take part in the activities of the Welcome Wagon committee, Save the Children
group, Collaboration with the Amnesty International.
Two years ago, we instituted yearly recognition of people or groups from the community who
promoted the cause of multiculturalism
Financial assistance to bring Russian children from the area around Chernobyl, site of nuclear
disaster, to our County
Formation of the Teviot group to reunite brothers Hagos and Teklay Messele from Ethiopia.

Leona Joseph, one of our Executive Board member served on the National Board of Immigrant
Women and Visible Minority Women.
Our former President, Beatrice O'Brien received provincial Volunteer Service Award
Our current President, Prem Dhir was awarded prestigious Pettigrew award and a recognition by
the County of Colchester and Town of Truro respectively for his many volunteer activities
Our active executive member Joe Cipolla was elected as President of the Multicultural Association of
Nova Scotia,which is the parent body of the MACC.
