The Facade
Ancestor worship
Macau (Macao) was under the Portuguese from 1557 till 20th of December, 1997. It is now considered to be a SAR (Special Administrative Region) of China. They have the one country - two systems thing going on, which means that even though China is their head, they still retain the same freedoms they did before.

The majority of people in Macau are Chinese, but there are a minority of Portuguese, Europeans, and other groups that do live there. The main language spoken is Cantonese, however, a lot of younger people are now learning Mandarin and English. Portuguese, although included on street signs everywhere is not highly used.

The main religions in China are Buddhism and ancestor worship. The portuguese brought in Roman Catholicism, but that is fallen by the wayside lately. You can still see a lot of Catholic stuff around the main square of Macau. There are quite a few small protestant churches around Macau as well. Also making an appearance in Macau are the Mormons.
